‘Udaipur Files’ producer Amit Jani gets Y-category security amid threats

Mumbai, Jul 27: Amid escalating controversy and security threats surrounding his upcoming film ‘Udaipur Files’, producer Amit Jani has been granted Y-category security by the government. The move follows reported threats linked to the film’s sensitive subject matter.

The security cover, however, is geographically restricted to northern India, specifically Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. In accordance with the Y-category protocol, Jani will be accompanied by 11 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel for his movements within these regions.

Expressing his gratitude, Jani took to X (formerly Twitter), thanking top leaders:

“Heartfelt thanks to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji and Home Minister Shri Amit Shah ji for providing Y category security,” he wrote, tagging official government handles.

‘Udaipur Files’ is a dramatized retelling of the 2022 murder of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal, who was killed for allegedly sharing a social media post in support of BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, whose controversial comments had triggered nationwide unrest. The attackers recorded a video claiming the murder was retaliation for his post.

The film has already drawn legal heat. One of the accused in the murder case, Javed, has approached the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the film’s release.

Initially slated for a July 11, 2025 release, ‘Udaipur Files’ faced multiple delays due to censorship hurdles and legal challenges. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) reportedly demanded 150 cuts before approving the film for release.

Now cleared, the film is scheduled to hit theatres on August 8, 2025. Actor Vijay Raaz plays the lead role in the film.

With political overtones and public sensitivity surrounding the events it portrays, ‘Udaipur Files’ is expected to be one of the most discussed—and debated—films upon its release.
