Panaji, Jul 27: In a major step to curb the illegal dumping of sewage in water bodies, the Goa government is set to implement a centralised tracking system for night soil tankers across the State. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had announced the initiative earlier this week during the budget discussion in the Goa Legislative Assembly.
Following the CM’s announcement, the Sewerage and Infrastructural Development Corporation of Goa Ltd (SIDCGL) has floated a tender inviting bids to design, develop and install a Smart Sewage Tanker Tracking System. Valued at Rs 7.65 crore, the project includes the setup of a Centralised Command Centre to monitor the movement of tankers transporting sewage from soak pits to treatment plants.
This move comes in response to growing complaints from citizens about sewage tankers illegally dumping waste into nullahs and water bodies, with many such incidents flagged on social media.
“All tankers operating in Goa will now be required to register with SIDCGL, and GIS tracking systems will be fitted on them,” said CM Sawant. He expressed confidence that the initiative would help ensure that sewage is delivered to treatment facilities instead of being illegally discharged.
As per tender documents, the selected agency will also be responsible for operating the system for 18 months post-installation.
SIDCGL has floated another tender worth Rs 6.68 crore for GIS mapping and data collection of sewer lines and manholes in Ponda town, aimed at improving infrastructure planning and maintenance.
Officials believe that these technology-driven interventions will significantly enhance Goa’s sanitation management and environmental protection efforts.
