Mangaluru/Udupi, Jul 27: Ceremonies were held across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Saturday to commemorate Kargil Vijay Diwas, marking India’s historic military victory over Pakistan in 1999 and honouring the brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice.
In Mangaluru, the Dakshina Kannada District Ex-Servicemen’s Association organised a tribute at the Kadri Hill War Memorial. Candles were lit, floral tributes were offered, and the supreme sacrifice of Indian soldiers during the Kargil War was solemnly remembered.

As part of the observance, the Surathkal Rashtra Bhakta Nagarika Vedike provided a donation to the Sainik Welfare Fund for the benefit of families of ex-servicemen. MP Capt Brijesh Chowta, ex-servicemen’s association president Sergeant Shrikant Shetty Bala, former president Colonel Nitteguthu Sharath Bhandary, Colonel Jayachandran, Capt Deepak Adyantaya, Sudhir Pai, Balachandra, Brigadier I N Rai, vice president of the Vedike’s Mangaluru unit Guruchandra Hegde, Sandeep Amblimogaru, and director Sandeep Pumpwell were present.
In Udupi, the Kargil Vijay Diwas event was held near the Ajjarkad War Memorial, organised by the Ex-Servicemen’s Forum and Society. Ganapayya hoisted the national flag and led the gathering in paying homage to the martyrs, recalling their service and sacrifice.
Dr F E A Rodrigues performed the ceremonial flag hoisting, and floral tributes followed. Among those present were Ganesh Rao, Jayanand Poojary, Prabhakar Nayak, Sundar Banger, Vishwanath Hande, Raghavendra Rao, Ranganath Kedilaya, Madhusudan Acharya, Parameshiva, and Raghavendra.
Events marking Kargil Vijay Diwas were also held at several locations in both districts, with educational institutions organising special programmes to honour the memory of the fallen heroes.
