Panaji, Jul 26: Veteran Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader and former Union Minister Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju was sworn in as the new Governor of Goa on Friday, marking his first appointment to a constitutional post. He succeeds P S Sreedharan Pillai, whose term concluded earlier this month.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Durbar Hall of Raj Bhavan in Dona Paula, where Justice Alok Aradhe, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, administered the oath of office.
In his first address as Governor, Raju expressed his enthusiasm and sense of responsibility, stating, “I am delighted to be in Goa. I am delighted to swear by the Constitution of India to serve the people of our country, but Goans in particular.” Acknowledging that he does not speak the local language, he said he looked forward to engaging with the people and learning from the experience.
Reflecting on his political career, Raju said this is his first constitutional role, but he brings with him a long and varied political journey. “I was a seven-time legislator in Andhra Pradesh before the bifurcation of the state. I have done a short stint in Parliament and served both in and out of government. I hope to get further enriched by the experiences here,” he said.
The new Governor also spoke on the importance of democratic cooperation, emphasizing unity as a cornerstone of national success. “If the people don’t work with the government, our democracy will be in peril. We want everyone to work unitedly. When we unite, we are second to none in the world.”
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant welcomed Raju, praising his rich experience in public life. “We welcome Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju to Goa. His vast experience in governance and administration will help the state move forward. We look forward to working closely with him,” Sawant said.
Raju’s appointment signals a new chapter for Goa, with hopes that his legislative and ministerial background will contribute to the state's administrative progress and public welfare.
