Zuarinagar, Jul 20: A woman from MVR Homes, has fallen prey to an online job scam and lost Rs 2.31 lac after being lured with a fake work-from-home offer between May 4 and 24.
The victim, Yashika Chopra, filed a complaint with Verna police stating that she was approached by unknown persons through WhatsApp and Telegram. The accused offered her a part-time job involving simple tasks such as hotel rating and added her to a Telegram group called “Merchant Welfare Task.”

Under the pretext of job-related assignments, the fraudsters convinced her to transfer money into multiple bank accounts. Chopra, trusting the scheme, made several transactions from her own and her husband’s accounts, eventually realising she had been duped.
Following the incident, Chopra lodged a formal complaint with Verna police. A case has been registered under Section 318(4) read with Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 66-D of the Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008.
The investigation is currently underway, led by Verna Police Inspector Anand Shirodkar under the supervision of Mormugao DySP Gurudas Kadam.
Police have issued a strong advisory urging citizen to remain vigilant when accepting online job offers and to thoroughly verify the legitimacy of any financial transactions linked to such opportunities.
