Mumbai, Jul 19: After a four-year break, Mumbai's much-loved mini train Van Rani is set to make a grand comeback on the scenic tracks of Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), bringing back childhood memories for countless Mumbaikars and nature lovers.
The miniature jungle train, which first started in 1974, was forced to halt operations in 2021 after Cyclone Tauktae caused severe damage. Now, thanks to a redevelopment push led by Union Minister Piyush Goyal and Maharashtra Forest Minister Ganesh Naik, the heritage ride is returning with a modern touch, supported by the Ministry of Railways.
The 2.3-km route has been fully revamped with new tracks and 15 reconstructed bridges for added safety. A brand-new toy train unit has joined the SGNP fleet, with successful trial and full-capacity runs conducted earlier this month.
Krishnagiri Station is now equipped with a new building, platform and ramps for easier access, while Teenmurthy Station is nearing completion and expected to be ready by July 25.
The revamped ride will also include educational wildlife panels, panoramic views of the Deer Park, and a refreshing experience through the park's vibrant biodiversity.
Expected to be relaunched by the end of July 2025, the Van Rani promises not only nostalgia but also a new way to explore Mumbai’s green heart and promote eco-tourism among young visitors.
