Bank manager ends life over work stress in Baramati

Pune, Jul 19: A senior official of a nationalised bank allegedly died by suicide inside the bank premises in Baramati, Pune district, citing work pressure as the reason, police said on Friday.

The deceased, Shivshankar Mitra, aged in his late 40s, was found hanging late Thursday night. Mitra had recently resigned from his position as chief manager on July 11, reportedly due to health concerns and an overwhelming workload. He was serving his notice period at the time of the incident.

According to Baramati police, Mitra stayed back at the branch after banking hours and asked all staff members to leave, assuring them he would close the branch. The watchman left around 9.30 pm. Mitra had earlier asked a colleague to bring a rope, and around 10 pm, he used it to take his life—an act captured on the branch’s CCTV.

When Mitra failed to return home or answer calls, his worried wife reached the bank around midnight. She found the lights still on and, after receiving no response, alerted the staff. On unlocking the premises, they discovered Mitra hanging from the ceiling.

Police recovered a note from the scene in which Mitra cited intense work pressure but did not blame anyone. He was also reportedly undergoing medical treatment. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
