Chandigarh, July 15: Legendary marathon runner Fauja Singh, affectionately known as the ‘Turbaned Tornado’, passed away at the age of 114 following a tragic road accident in his ancestral village in Jalandhar district, Punjab. His death marks the end of an era for global athletics and the Sikh community, as tributes pour in for a man whose extraordinary stamina and indomitable spirit redefined the limits of human endurance.
Authorities in Jalandhar confirmed that Fauja Singh was fatally injured after being struck by an unidentified vehicle while he was out for a walk in his native Bias village. He sustained serious head injuries and later passed away at a private hospital.

Adampur police station SHO Hardevpreet Singh stated that the vehicle involved in the incident was coming from Bhogpur when it hit Singh on the roadside. The driver fled the scene immediately after the collision and is yet to be identified.
A case of rash and negligent driving has been registered, and police have launched a search to trace the absconding motorist.
Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the veteran athlete. “Deeply saddened by the passing of Sardar Fauja Singh Ji, the legendary marathon runner and an enduring symbol of resilience and hope,” he said. Recalling a recent interaction, he added, “I had the honour of walking alongside him during the two-day 'Nasha Mukt – Rangla Punjab' march from his village Beas, Jalandhar in December 2024. Even at 114, his presence infused the campaign with unmatched energy.”
Former Punjab chief minister and BJP leader Captain Amarinder Singh also paid tribute to the centenarian on social media. “Deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Fauja Singh Ji. His extraordinary life and unwavering spirit will continue to inspire generations,” he wrote.
Shiromani Akali Dal leader Daljit S Cheema echoed similar sentiments, stating, “A global icon of endurance and inspiration, he proved that age is no barrier. His life and legacy will continue to motivate generations.”
Known as the ‘Sikh Superman’, Fauja Singh captured international attention when he began running marathons at the age of 89. He made his debut at the London Marathon in 2000 and went on to complete the race six more times. Over the years, he participated in marathons across Toronto, New York, and several other global cities, consistently breaking age-category records.
Beyond his athletic achievements, Singh was widely celebrated for his role in advocating health, fitness, and drug-free living. His remarkable journey from a quiet rural life to global marathon stardom made him a symbol of perseverance and hope for millions.
Singh’s passing is not only a loss to the world of sport but to a broader global movement of healthy ageing and resilience. His legacy will endure in every stride taken by those he inspired.
