Udupi: Padubidri police arrest two notorious interstate thieves in multi-district housebreak probe

Udupi, July 12: The Padubidri police have apprehended two notorious interstate thieves in connection with a recent house theft case, with links to incidents under the jurisdictions of Padubidri, Kota, and Kundapura police stations in Udupi district. The arrested individuals have been identified as Ibrahim Kalandar and Mohammed Riaz.

On June 22, burglars allegedly broke into the residence of Ganesh Prasad Shetty, located near the Kamath petrol pump in Padebettu village, under Padubidri police station limits.

The intruders forcibly entered the home by breaking the door and made off with an old gold chain worth Rs 1,20,000 and Rs 25,000 in cash. A case was filed based on Shetty’s complaint at the Padubidri police station.



Following the incident, and on the orders of Udupi district superintendent of police Hariram Shankar, IPS, a coordinated investigation was launched under the guidance of additional superintendent of police Sadananda S Nayak and Parameshwara Hegde, and under the leadership of Dr I Harsha Priyamvadha, IPS, assistant superintendent of police, Karkala sub-division.

An investigation team comprising Kaup circle inspector Jayashree Mane, Padubidri police sub-inspectors Sakthivelu and Anil Kumar, ASI Rajesh P, constables Girish, Krishna Prasad, Sandesh Kumar, and additional staff from Kaup circle office, Kaup police station, and Ajekaru police station, including head constables Satish and Pradeep Shetty, gathered intelligence and proceeded to Sastha Nagar, Mogral Puttur, in Kasaragod district of Kerala.

There, the team arrested the two accused: Ibrahim Kalandar, resident of Kalai House, Koyla village, Puttur taluk, Dakshina Kannada district, and Mohammed Riaz alias Kadappa Riaz, a native of Kumble Urmichal Bekur, Kasaragod district.

Police also seized a Tata Punch vehicle allegedly used in the theft, along with Rs 24,000 in cash. The accused were produced before the Udupi court and have been remanded to judicial custody.

Accused with extensive criminal records

Investigations have revealed that Ibrahim Kalandar is a habitual offender involved in a long series of thefts and break-ins. He has previously been implicated in two temple thefts reported at Badiyadka Police Station in Kasaragod, a house burglary at Vidyanagar police station, and an attempted robbery at Manjeshwara police station. He is also linked to a house robbery at Melparamba police station, a society robbery at Muniyalu under Hebri police station in Udupi, and a bank theft at Karnataka Bank in Vittla.

Additionally, he has been involved in an areca nut theft case at Moodbidri police station, multiple house thefts under the jurisdictions of Puttur city and Rural police stations, a chain-snatching case at Kadaba police station, and shop thefts reported at Uppinangady, Bantwal Rural, and Kushalnagar police stations. He was most recently released from Hosadurga district jail in Kerala on February 15, 2025.

The second accused, Mohammed Riaz alias Kadappa Riaz, has also amassed a serious criminal background. He has been booked for murder at Kumble Police Station in Kasaragod district and was charged with selling ganja at Puttur Town police station. He had been released from Kasaragod sub-jail on May 12..
