Liverpool, Jul 12: Liverpool Football Club has made the heartfelt decision to retire jersey number 20 across all teams—including LFC Women and the Academy—in honour of Diogo Jota, who tragically lost his life in a car accident last week alongside his brother, Andre Silva.
In an official club statement, Liverpool paid tribute to the beloved Portuguese forward:
“It was the number he wore with pride and distinction, leading us to countless victories in the process – and Diogo Jota will forever be Liverpool Football Club’s number 20.”

The club described the move as a recognition not only of Jota’s immense contributions on the pitch since his arrival in 2020, but also of the deep emotional bonds he formed with teammates, staff, and fans.
The 28-year-old forward, who joined from Wolverhampton Wanderers, was a key player during a golden spell for the Reds—winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and two EFL Cups. Internationally, Jota earned 49 caps for Portugal, scoring 14 goals, and was part of the squads that lifted the UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and again in 2025, just weeks before his passing.
According to Spanish police, Jota’s car crashed in Zamora province, reportedly due to a high-speed tyre blowout that caused the vehicle to veer off-road and catch fire. The tragic incident shocked the footballing world and sparked an outpouring of grief from fans and players alike.
Michael Edwards, FSG CEO of Football, highlighted the unprecedented nature of the tribute:
“It was vitally important to us to involve Diogo’s wife, Rute, and his family in the decision. I believe this is the first time in Liverpool Football Club’s history that such an honour has been bestowed upon an individual. By retiring this squad number, we are making it eternal – and therefore never to be forgotten.”
“Diogo joined us in 2020, he won us number 20, and he wore – with honour, distinction, and affection – the number 20. As far as Liverpool Football Club is concerned, he will be forever our number 20.”
As part of its commemorative efforts, Liverpool will honour Diogo Jota and Andre Silva during a tribute at their upcoming friendly match against Preston North End, ensuring their memory lives on in the hearts of players and supporters.
Jota’s legacy—marked by talent, humility, and a fierce passion for the game—will remain etched in Anfield’s history, his number 20 jersey now a symbol of enduring respect and remembrance.
