California, Jul 9: Despite being the largest internal organ and a vital powerhouse of the body, the liver’s health is often overlooked. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a California-based gastroenterologist trained at Harvard and Stanford, has shared nine key insights to help people better care for their liver—a crucial organ responsible for filtering blood, processing nutrients and toxins, and supporting metabolism and immunity.
1. Liver can regenerate – But it’s not invincible
The liver has a remarkable ability to regrow damaged cells. However, Dr. Sethi warns that repeated injury—caused by alcohol, unhealthy diets, or disease—can result in irreversible scarring, known as cirrhosis.

2. Coffee is good for your liver
Drinking three or more cups of coffee daily can lower the risk of liver cancer and cirrhosis by 40%, studies show. Dr. Sethi advises skipping sugar and cream for best results and warns about individual sensitivity to caffeine.
3. Fatty liver isn’t just a drinker’s disease
One in three adults now suffers from fatty liver, and many of them are non-drinkers. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), often driven by poor diet and inactivity, remains symptomless until serious damage occurs—making regular checkups essential.
4. Every pill passes through your liver
Whether it’s a prescription drug or an over-the-counter painkiller like acetaminophen, your liver processes it all. Dr. Sethi urges caution and recommends consulting doctors for the correct dosage to avoid accidental liver damage.
5. Sleep fuels liver repair
Liver function is deeply connected to your sleep quality. Dr. Sethi stresses the importance of 7–9 hours of sound sleep each night to help the liver metabolize nutrients and clear toxins efficiently.
6. The liver has its own biological clock
Your liver operates on a circadian rhythm. Eating late at night disrupts its natural detoxification process, potentially contributing to fat buildup in the liver.
7. Hidden liver toxins are everywhere
Everyday products like cleaning agents, pesticides, and even cosmetics may contain liver-stressing toxins. “Choose natural alternatives,” Dr Sethi advised.
8. Beware of ‘healthy’ supplements
Some herbal supplements and high-dose vitamins—often marketed as health enhancers—can actually harm the liver. Always consult a doctor before starting any supplement regimen, Dr. Sethi warned.
9. Water is your liver’s best friend
Drinking 2–3 liters of water daily supports the liver in flushing out toxins. According to Dr. Sethi, staying hydrated is one of the simplest and most effective ways to support liver function.
From proper sleep and hydration to mindful use of medications and supplements, Dr. Sethi's insights remind us that liver health deserves daily attention—not just medical intervention when problems arise.
