81 IRB personnel transferred after foiled drug smuggling bid at Colvale Jail

Panaji, Jul 5: Following a failed attempt to smuggle drugs into the Central Jail at Colvale and serious lapses in security, 81 personnel of the India Reserve Battalion (IRB) posted at the facility have been transferred. Of these, three have been moved to the IRB Camp at Bordem while the rest have been shifted to the DySP Traffic (North) office. A fresh team of 81 personnel from Traffic North has now been deployed at the prison.

The reshuffle comes in the wake of last month’s sensational drug smuggling attempt uncovered by the Colvale police, where seven suspicious packets of suspected ganja were found near Watch Towers 3 and 4. The contraband weighed 1.397 kg and is estimated to be worth around Rs 1.4 lac.

Acting swiftly, police registered an FIR under the NDPS Act and arrested three men – Gautam Talwar, Samuel Pujari, and Jaffer Mulla, all aged 24. A minor involved in the case was handed over to his parents under the direction of the Juvenile Justice Board.

Authorities have initiated a thorough investigation, and both jail staff and inmates are currently being questioned as part of the probe.

The transfer order was issued by the IRB Commandant in a bid to restore accountability and tighten security at the high-risk correctional facility.
