Panaji, Jun 30: After taking strides in transforming Panaji under the Smart City Mission, the Goa government is now exploring the possibility of developing three more key towns — Mapusa, Vasco, and Margao — into smart cities. The move is proposed under the Central Government’s AMRUT scheme (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation).

Speaking at a function organised by the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), Chief Minister Pramod Sawant revealed the state’s plan to expand the Smart City initiative beyond the capital. “We are working towards implementing the Smart City project in Mapusa, Vasco, and Margao in the next phase,” Sawant announced, underscoring the government’s commitment to urban modernisation.

He further reiterated the state’s vision of “Green Goa, Clean Goa,” and called upon members of the business and industrial community to actively support the mission. “Government alone cannot do it. We need industry participation to make this vision a reality,” he added.

The AMRUT scheme focuses on improving basic infrastructure, including water supply, sewerage, urban transport, and green spaces, while also embracing smart technology to enhance governance and urban living. With Panaji already seeing infrastructural upgrades under the mission, the inclusion of these three major towns could significantly transform Goa’s urban landscape in the years to come.
