Mapusa, Jun 28: With the monsoon setting in, residents of Angod ward in Mapusa are once again grappling with deteriorating road conditions, as incomplete infrastructure work and poor maintenance have rendered key stretches virtually impassable. The situation has sparked public anger and renewed scrutiny over the authorities’ lack of preparedness.
The primary road connecting Mapusa Church to the town’s interior—a crucial 1-kilometre stretch used daily by schoolchildren, two-wheeler riders, and private vehicles—has become a hazard zone. Deep potholes, broken patches, and sunken tar now define what was once a well-travelled route.

Years of utility-related excavation have taken a toll. Initially, the road was dug up to shift overhead electricity lines underground, including both 33KV and 11KV cables. Soon after, it was opened up again for water pipeline work. Despite these major interventions, proper resurfacing was never undertaken, leaving behind a crumbling, uneven surface.
While a few patches received hurried temporary fixes, large sections were left to degrade further. The result is a treacherous drive—especially dangerous during the rains. "I’ve seen two-wheeler riders skid and crash. Just last week, a mother and her young child fell while trying to dodge a pothole," said Anita Naik, a long-time Angod resident.
Locals say repeated pleas for action have been ignored. "At the very least, the main road to the church should have been repaired. It’s a vital link for thousands of residents," added Peter D’Sa, another area resident.
Local MLA Joshua D’Souza had earlier assured citizens that patchwork would be completed. However, the early onset of monsoon rains reportedly disrupted those plans—leaving residents frustrated and forced to navigate worsening road conditions.
With two more months of heavy rain expected, citizens fear the road may become completely unusable unless emergency repairs are carried out. Many are now urging authorities to prioritise this stretch for immediate action before more accidents occur.
