NTPC's Barh Thermal Plant set to be fully operational from Jul 1

New Delhi, Jun 26: NTPC, India’s largest power utility, announced that its 3,300 MW Barh Super Thermal Power Project in Bihar will become fully commercially operational on July 1, with the commissioning of its final unit.

The milestone will be marked by the start of commercial operations of Unit 3 (660 MW), the last pending unit under Stage I of the project. This development completes the phased rollout of all five units of 660 MW each.

In a regulatory filing, NTPC stated:

“Unit 3 (660 MW) of Barh Super Thermal Power Project, Stage-I (3x660 MW) is declared on commercial operation w.e.f 00:00 Hrs of 01.07.2025.”

Following this, NTPC’s total installed and commercial capacity will rise to 60,978 MW on a standalone basis and 82,080 MW on a group basis.

Project Overview:

• Stage I: Three units of 660 MW each
o Unit 1: Commissioned in November 2021
o Unit 2: Commissioned in July 2023
o Unit 3: To begin commercial operation on July 1, 2025

• Stage II: Two units of 660 MW each
o Unit 4: Commissioned in November 2014
o Unit 5: Commissioned in February 2016

With the Barh plant now fully functional, it will significantly strengthen electricity supply in Bihar and surrounding regions. The project has been a crucial part of NTPC’s expansion strategy in eastern India and a key step toward enhancing the country’s power infrastructure.
