Washington, Jun 22: Heightened security measures have been implemented across major US cities following American airstrikes on three nuclear facilities in Iran, marking Washington’s entry into the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict. Authorities in New York, Washington DC, and Los Angeles have issued public safety advisories and deployed additional forces near religious, diplomatic, and cultural sites.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) announced it is “tracking the situation unfolding in Iran” and, as a precautionary measure, has deployed additional personnel across sensitive locations throughout the city. “We’re coordinating with our federal partners and will continue to monitor for any potential impact to NYC,” NYPD stated on X (formerly Twitter).
In the nation’s capital, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) confirmed it is “actively coordinating with local, state, and federal agencies” to ensure the safety of residents and visitors. “While there are no known threats to DC at this time, MPD has increased its presence at religious institutions across the city,” the department said in a statement.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass echoed similar concerns, saying the city is “closely monitoring any threats to public safety” in the wake of the strikes. “There are no known credible threats at this time, but LAPD is stepping up patrols near places of worship, community gathering spaces, and other sensitive sites,” she posted on X.
The swift US military action, which targeted Iran’s key nuclear sites in Isfahan, Natanz, and Fordow, was described by President Donald Trump as a “complete and total obliteration” of Iran’s nuclear enrichment facilities. Speaking from the White House, Trump stated that the mission was a “spectacular military success.”
In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi condemned the strikes as a “grave violation” of the UN Charter and international law, asserting that Tehran reserves the right to defend itself. “The United States has attacked Iran’s peaceful nuclear installations in violation of the NPT,” Araghchi said.
Meanwhile, Yemen's Houthi military group declared that the US strikes marked the "beginning of war,” raising concerns of a broader regional escalation.
Security agencies across the US continue to remain on high alert amid growing geopolitical tensions.
