FBI declassifies explosive files on 2020 US election interference; China, Russia under scanner

Washington, Jun 17: In a dramatic revelation that has stirred political debate, FBI Director Kash Patel has declassified and released a set of documents reportedly containing "alarming allegations" of foreign interference in the 2020 US presidential election.

Taking to social media, Director Patel stated, "The FBI has located documents which detail alarming allegations related to the 2020 US election, including interference by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). I have immediately declassified the material and turned the documents over to Chairman Grassley for further review."

The declassified documents reportedly reference efforts by China, Russia, and Iran to influence the 2020 election, with each country allegedly using a mix of covert and overt strategies to sway the American electorate.

A previous advisory by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) had similarly warned of such threats before the 2020 polls. William Evanina, then head of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center (NCSC), had publicly stated that China opposed Donald Trump's re-election, while Russia was believed to be undermining Joe Biden’s candidacy through disinformation campaigns across media platforms.

Iran, too, was accused of seeking to erode trust in democratic institutions by stoking confusion and misinformation.

At the time, then-President Trump had addressed these concerns in a press conference, acknowledging the seriousness of the claims but disputing Russia's alleged support for his campaign. “No one has been tougher on Russia than my administration,” he asserted.

However, since returning to the White House in January 2025, President Trump’s tone has softened regarding Russia, raising eyebrows across diplomatic and intelligence circles.

Political analysts suggest that the latest declassification by Patel could reignite debate over election security, foreign influence, and the integrity of democratic processes in the United States.

Meanwhile, Congressional leaders, particularly Senator Chuck Grassley, are expected to initiate further investigations into the contents of the declassified material. A formal statement from the White House or the Department of Justice is awaited as tensions mount in the nation's capital.
