London, Jun 13: Australia faced a major setback on Day 3 of the ICC World Test Championship final at Lord’s when star batter Steve Smith was rushed for X-rays after suffering a compound dislocation to his right little finger.

The injury occurred in the 20th over while Smith was fielding at wide first slip. South African skipper Temba Bavuma edged a delivery from Mitchell Starc, and Smith failed to hold the sharp catch. He immediately left the field and was later taken to hospital for further assessment, Cricket Australia confirmed.

Teenager Sam Konstas replaced Smith briefly but also required medical attention, prompting Matthew Kuhnemann to take the field.

The injury casts serious doubt over Smith’s participation in Australia’s upcoming West Indies tour, starting in ten days. Smith had scored 66 and 13 in the final, and with Australia’s batting done, his absence may not affect this match, but his fitness remains a concern going forward.

Meanwhile, South Africa, chasing 282, reached 94/2 at stumps, with Aiden Markram unbeaten on 49. Captain Bavuma walked off in discomfort after tweaking his hamstring and will be assessed before the final session.
