Mumbai, Jun 2: In two separate road tragedies in the eastern suburbs on Saturday, a 24-year-old vegetable vendor and a 47-year-old motorcyclist lost their lives after being hit by a towing van and a dumper, respectively.
The first incident took place on the Mankhurd-Ghatkopar flyover when Vikas Yadav (24), a vegetable vendor from Khar West, was returning from the APMC market in Vashi with his father. While driving his auto, Yadav reportedly maintained a safe distance from a towing van ahead when the van allegedly applied sudden brakes. The rickshaw collided with the van, and the iron hook hit Yadav on the head. He was rushed to Shatabdi Hospital but was declared dead. His father, who also sustained injuries, was treated and discharged.
The towing van driver fled the spot. Deonar police have registered a case and are scanning CCTV footage to identify and trace the driver.
In the second mishap, Subhash Dulgach (47), a housekeeping firm manager from Vile Parle East, was riding his motorcycle in Chembur West when a dumper rammed into him from behind near Chhedanagar. Dulgach suffered critical head injuries and was admitted to the ICU at Rajawadi Hospital, where he succumbed during treatment.
The dumper driver, Govinda Chavan (35) from Turbhe, Navi Mumbai, surrendered at the Tilak Nagar police station and was arrested for rash and negligent driving.
Both cases have sparked concerns over heavy vehicle safety and driver accountability on Mumbai roads.
