Tejasvee Ghosalkar resigns from Shiv Sena (UBT); Thackerays urge reconsideration

Mumbai, May 14: In a significant development within Mumbai’s political circles, former BMC corporator Tejasvee Ghosalkar has resigned from the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction) citing personal reasons, creating ripples in the party’s north Mumbai unit.

Tejasvee, who led the women’s wing of Shiv Sena (UBT) in the Dahisar Assembly constituency, reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the functioning of the party at the local level, though she did not specify any reason officially in her resignation.

Udesh Patekar, Sena (UBT) vibhag pramukh, confirmed the development and stated that Ghosalkar had not elaborated on her decision, leaving the party leadership and cadre speculating.

Tejasvee is the daughter-in-law of former MLA Vinod Ghosalkar and was married to Abhishek Ghosalkar, who was tragically shot dead during a Facebook Live session in early 2024, allegedly by local resident Morris Noronha. Abhishek, like his wife, was a former corporator of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The Ghosalkar family has maintained a close and long-standing relationship with the Thackerays, with party chief Uddhav Thackeray, his wife Rashmi Thackeray, and son Aaditya Thackeray all personally attending Abhishek’s funeral — a gesture that reflected the family’s deep-rooted ties with the Sena (UBT) leadership.

Sources within the party revealed that efforts are underway to persuade Tejasvee to reconsider her resignation, with the Thackerays personally reaching out in an attempt to retain her in the fold.

While Tejasvee’s exit is officially being termed a “personal decision,” political observers believe it could signal deeper undercurrents of dissatisfaction within certain sections of the party, especially in the backdrop of internal factionalism and local-level grievances in Mumbai's suburbs.

As the city gears up for the next round of civic and state-level electoral battles, Ghosalkar’s departure may raise concerns for the Sena (UBT) about retaining its influence in Dahisar and adjoining areas.
