Mangaluru, May 1: Mangaluru city police have registered three cases against individuals and groups for spreading false and provocative content on social media in connection with the recent murder of a daily wage labourer near Kudupu.
According to a press release issued on May 1, the police stated that certain persons were deliberately circulating misleading information with the intent to incite unrest and disturb communal harmony in the city.
A case has been registered at Konaje police station (Crime No. 55/2025) under Sections 192, 353(1), and 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The complaint pertains to a misleading message shared in the WhatsApp group “BEARY MUSLIM ARMY” that falsely claimed the murder weapon—a bat stump—had been recovered, and questioned who was behind the killing.
Another case has been filed at Barke police station (Crime No. 44/2025) under Section 353(2) of the BNS, 2023. The case relates to the Instagram account “beary-royal-nawab,” which had uploaded content aimed at misguiding the public.
A third case has been registered at Kankanady Town police station under Section 353(1)(b) of the BNS, 2023, after fake and inflammatory posts were shared in the WhatsApp group “Maikallo Beary.” Zakir Hussain, a resident of Munnur village in Ullal taluk, has been identified as the individual responsible for the post.
Mangaluru city police have reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and public order and warned that strict action will be taken against anyone found spreading misinformation or attempting to disrupt harmony through social media.
