Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (EP)

Mangaluru, May 8: An incident of arguments, pushing, and assaults occurred between auto rickshaw drivers and train passengers at Mangaluru Central Railway Station this morning, May 8.

Witnesses reported indecent assaults by auto rickshaw drivers against female passengers at the railway station today. The heated arguments between the rickshaw drivers and passengers were captured on social media and have since gone viral.

The incident unfolded when a couple arrived from Chennai by train this morning and were met by two local individuals who had come to pick them up.

According to the current arrangement at the railway station, parking is only permitted in designated areas. Pick-ups and drop-offs are allowed only in front of the main gate, without causing inconvenience to other passengers. Arguments arose between Chandan, the parking attendant, and the two locals who had come to pick up the couple. Rickshaw drivers witnessing the altercation intervened in support of Chandan. As tensions escalated, pushing and assaults ensued.

The police commissioner has assured that appropriate action will be taken in connection with this incident.

Is there any reason why Ola and Uber are not available and even if available did not take off in Mangalore like Bangalore? In their absence, the taxi charges are not only exorbitant, but the main customer base for this are aged people. Autos are also highly unregulated. Pricing should be transparent and must be published everywhere, so that Auto drivers and taxi drivers understand that they are there to serve the customers and not vice versa. This incident shows how aggressive they can be. Also, where are the police?

If we (citizens) cannot pick or drop from PF2 then how rickshaw drivers can do the same? Rules should be same for all right. Railways needs to look into this issue. Also if train is in PF2/3/4, its difficult to reach there from PF1 (especially for senior citizens), so convenient would be go directly to PF2 though back side. Whatever auto drivers tell, that is the rule in the Mangalore now. This should be stopped at any cost.

The uncouth behaviour of the autodrivers at Mangalore railway station is notorious. Those passengers, who are able , manage to hire or request their friends or relatives to pick them from the railway station. The sufferers are those from other states and poor passengers. Once I happened to engage an auto from Mangalore Central Railway station. I was surprised by his gentle behaviour and helping nature. When I enquired why we find hardly anyone like him in the railway station his reply was thought provoking. He said he never comes to the railway station as he does not want curses of poor and helpless passengers. He admitted that most of the autos parked in the railway station come only to fleece the passengers and there are some bad elements in the group who can harm passengers and the money earned by them will not bring peace of mind and happiness to their families and he does not want such money.

Auto Rikshaw drivers & private busses in Mangalore are a curse to the society of Mangalore.. Why don't local govt. put strict laws in place to auto drivers and stop issuing permits to private busses in Mangalore. More than a way of public transport they have always been a nuisance to the society that too towards ladies and elderly people.

Very bad image for the city and to the railways. Stern action needs to be taken on auto drivers at railway and bus stations. These rogues keep waiting at these stands indulging in unwanted activities. They assume they are the rulers of these stations.. These nuisance creators have no stand at the airports. They have still not realized that they are the losers continuing to cause damage to the entire community of auto drivers. railways must implement a paid auto /taxi counter within the railway station and monitor movement using GPS. The district administration and police must monitor this.
