Haveri, Apr 19: BJP candidate for Haveri and former chief minister Basavaraj Bommai on Friday attacked the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government for the breakdown of law and order machinery and claimed that atrocities against women have increased by 43% under the Congress rule.

Bommai visited the Hukkeri Math in Haveri and sought the blessings of the pontiff Sri Sadashiva Swamiji before going to file his nomination papers along with senior BJP leader B S Yediyurappa, Union Minister Prahlad Joshi and
other party leaders.

Speaking to media persons after submitting his nomination papers, he said the law and order situation in the State has deteriorated under Congress rule and alleged that the police stations have become “settlement centres.”

The stabbing of a girl in Hubballi by a youth inside the college campus proves that the appeasement politics of the Congress party has emboldened the criminals, he said and attacked Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara for dismissing the incident as a “love tangle.”

While the Home Minister terms the Hubballi stabbing incident as a “love affair,” he said the Hubballi Police Commissioner has described the incident as one due to “rejection of love advances” and wondered why the incident is treated lightly by the government.

Responding to Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar’s statement that such incidents had taken place even under Bommai regime, the BJP leader described it as irresponsible and pointed out that responsible persons in the government should not justify such incidents.

Bommai demanded the setting up a special investigation team to investigate the Hubballi stabbing incident and find out the persons behind the incident.

Asked about Minister Shivananda Patil’s statement that Bommai is getting old,
the BJP leader mentioned that Patil was senior to him in politics and asked him to concentrate on his work. He attacked Shivananda Patil for ensuring that his daughter was given the Bagalkot party ticket denying the claims of Veena Kashappanavar.

“Age is just a number. Let him see the work done by me at 65. The  developmental works under my rule speak for themselves,” he added.
