Mangaluru: Bus brushes against scooty - Child killed, mother seriously injured

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Mar 24: In a tragic and heart-wrenching accident that occurred at Bendorewell in the city on Friday afternoon a young boy, died in front of the eyes of his own mother, as the scooty she was driving was knocked down by a private bus and the boy fell under the wheels of the vehicle.

Hardik Kumar (11), son of Swati Pramod (33), is the unfortunate young boy, who lost his life. His mother Swati is injured.

Swati and her son Hardik were moving from Kankanady to Nantoor at around 3 pm on scooty. As a bus was parked at Bendorewell bus stand, Swati took her scooter to the right. In the meantime, a private bus which rushed from behind knocked the handle of the scooty. Both Swati and Hardik fell on the road. Hardik was thrown to the right side and the driver of the private bus drove the bus on him.

Both Swati and deceased Hardik were wearing helmet. However, the helmet worn by Hardik came off his head as he fell down. Blood was oozing from the ears of Hardik, who was severely injured. Though he was rushed immediately to the hospital, he succumbed. It is said that Hardik’s thread ceremony (Upanayana) had occurred a few months ago.

Hardik was studying in fifth grade of a private school of Kodialbail in the city. He was an excellent student. His mother Swati is also a teacher, it is learnt.

Utter negligence on the part of the private bus driver was the reason for he accident. As there was no one to get down at the specified bus stop, the driver, instead of slowing down, increased the speed and overtook the already parked bus and hit the scooty.

Bendorewell junction is one of the busiest in the city as buses going towards, Kasargod, Puttur, Dharmasthala, Mangaladevi, Nanthoor, Hampankatta pass through this junction.

As is prevalent in the Middle East, the driver of this bus and his employer must pay blood money of a minimum Rs. 50 lakhs to the aggrieved family OR both should be roughed up by the scruff of their collars and thrown in the jail. No excuse. It will be a deterrent for other drivers not to play with peoples lives.

Till there is massive public outrage against the bus mafia, nothing is going to change. Everyone knows that the officials are hand in glove with them, and that they are going to walk scot-free no matter how many lives are lost. We have only ourselves to blame, because we will forget this incident in a day or two and move on with our lives till it happens again.

We are quiet on this incidents. Bus owners should be taught a lesson by the public. The main reason is we are all silent after this incident.

Killer Private Buses of Mangalore and Udupi!!! These goons break the laws under the noses of the Police who are busy collecting dines from the public while letting these rogues to go scot free. Bus owners bribe the RTO and Police to turn a blind eye to their rash and negligent driving. Vedavas Kamath don't be blind to this !!!! Elections are round the corner !!!!.

Instead of all the "development " in smart city, a MRTS (Metro) would have solved most of the traffic and parking problems. Only a few busses would have been required, journeys would be safe, comfortable, fast and cheap in a metro train. But unfortunately, elected Mangas have small brains....

Total failure of our Traffic department, administration, DC, and MCC.. They should be held responsible for this tragedy. There maybe a big lobby not to install Signal lights in Mangalore city areas by our Private buses and city buses. First of all shieft the service bus stand to Pumpwell immediately to save more lives. We need educated and literate representatives.

Very tragic incident... There is absolutely no solution to this bus menace. Drivers are least bothered about human lives, they are just bothered about their days collection & comission. A month ago I was supposed to go to Kulshekar from Kankanady bus stop. There comes 2 buses (15 & the other bus going to Kulshekar towards Moodushedde or Shaktinagar don't remember). These 2 buses were competing each other in that heavy traffic from Kankanady bus stop till Bendoorwell bus stop as if like Ambulance urgency. The bus which going towards Kulshekar which I boarded stopped at Bendoorwell bus stop (wine shop) for almost 8 minutes. Can you imagine their utter negligence? I was in a hurry to go to Kulshekar, but this bus was moving like bullock cart from Bendoorwell bustop till I got down with each & every stop waiting for 3-5 minutes. Their intention is only to catch passengers & wait for sight of next bus to proceed.

How many more lives will these mass murdering maniacs behind the wheels of these buses be allowed to take ? Why doesn't the RTO suspend the licenses of all private bus operators and hand over all these routes to the far more sensibly driven KSRTC buses? The bus will be allowed to resume on the route, the driver will get away scot free, but the parents who lost their son, will they ever recover from this tragedy? Even the common public should be blamed for the audacity in which these crazy fellows drive on the roads. None of the passengers ever raise a word, none of the bus drivers ever get thrashed by the public for such careless and rash driving. May be then, things will change, if not, the next poor victim awaits their fate at the hands of these Yamraajs behind the wheels of these private buses!!!

Riding 2 wheeler in India is very risky within city limits .. I would suggest take a ride in a bus or an auto ..if you can afford , buy a car it is safe.

Very sad and may the child's soul rest in peace. Police at Bendorewell always sitting comfortably under the canopy and chatting. The police at Bendorewell not bothered of any traffic jam or cars parked in unauthorised places. Catch them nabbing the buses overtaking, why isn't the signal not functioning at the Bendorewell junction. First abolish the private bus mafia, along with the RTO.

Unless there are stricter/tougher laws these accidents will continue. Because the drivers are very well aware that they will get away. Reckless drivers should be severely punished by imprisonment of atleast 7 years and blood money (penalty as in middle east countries) of atleast 25 to 50 lakhs. Only when it hurts people follow rules.

It is ridiculous to overtake another bus in a busy city limit. There should be strict speed limit on busses travelling in city limits. In western countries there is 20 mph speed limit in town roads and built up areas to reduce accidents. When drivers cause accidents killing people due to carelessness their licence should be suspended for 2 or 3 years and should be made to pass driving test again.
