Kavitha Shetty: A Decade to Reckon But a Life to Admire

Media Release

Mar 8: A woman is born to make a difference to this world always, her contribution may be miniscule by some standards but still she leaves behind her contribution to be admired by the world. She might be a writer, a freedom fighter, a mother, a wife, a responsible daughter, a businesswoman, or the many facets and titles that she holds. Through her entire life journey she does leaves behind a mark of her own in her own particular way. A day is not enough to celebrate her achievements but still let’s speak loudly and appreciate them by saying “Happy Women’s Day” today.

Today lets speak about a woman who achieved many laurels in her life through sheer hark work only, nothing came free to her, she always has a smile on her face a hard working woman who finds it difficult to understand the various lies that people say to survive, she always speaks the truth but fights everyday to prove it. That’s her story untold, unspoken, here’s a chapter of her story.

Here’s a small story line of a woman named Kavita Shetty, today she is director of a tech based media company in Mumbai, but what went behind to reach here. As her company completes ten years of success a decade long struggle is a testament to her ability, her steely character, her truthfulness and her desire to make a better world.

Born to a bunt family from Karnataka the only child to her parents, always lived in Mumbai from a suburban place in thane district called Dombivli, in her own words as she says ‘for many snobbish Mumbaikars Dombivli is just a crowded suburban with crowded trains, water & electricity issues and nothing else, but they don’t know that Dombivli is the second most educated city in India after Chandigarh, the place is a hub for many legendary Marathi writers’.

Kavita Shetty completed her education from Dombivli, did her masters in the subject of physics, although she was aiming to become a software engineer then, physics was her favorite subject always, she had stood first in her junior college with 91 marks in physics in the board exam. But as they say faith had different plans, she wanted to become a software engineer but her maternal grandmother was been treated for cancer at the same time, she went to VJTI college for the admission for four months, eventually on October 16, she got a seat in one of the colleges, in her own words, “I was standing there waiting desperately for a engineering seat and their it flashes on the screen, my coveted seat, my mom and me walk towards the admission counter to complete the process, just when we were supposed to give the payment, I stopped, I ask my mother to walk off and leave the seat, my mother’s face was filled with shock, she had no idea why I was doing this. For 4 months I had been running around and when that seat is right in front, I am not taking it. The student behind went ecstatic with disbelief. Why I walked out was not understood by my mom for a really long time. I had to then take an admission for BSC in a suburban college. The reason was very simple, my grandmother was suffering through cancer, my mom was taking care of her, my parents were struggling with money, if I had taken that seat they would have been burdened with another pain, so I silently left that seat. I waited for 4 months only to see can I achieve it or not and yes I did achieved it. I left it is a different story, I made my choice, today I don’t hold any regrets for the same. But the next few years I did for some time. Why because I failed in physics in the first year of my BSc, the same subject where I was the top scorer in the entire college. It was shocking and I had no clue why I failed. I gave a re-exam and I passed, but to my greatest shock when I received the marksheet in my hands, I saw that I never failed actually, my theory marks where different, but so was my practical’s marks, which shouldn’t have been the case, so after some investigation by the college department it was found out that it was a computer mistake, while entering the marks of students, roll no 654 received roll no 653 marks and vice versa. I had never failed. Those where the times, by then I had lost a lot with regards to my confidence, my friends, even my parents were not able to understand my dilemma, I went through a very difficult phase. The irony is today software engineers work for me. I been through many ups and downs in life, this was just the beginning.

“I used to receive scholarship from my dad’s company, I had to work hard day night so that I retain that scholarship, the task was to get distinction every year, or else there was no scholarship.

“Graduating was important, but my interest in studies had gone down because of one bad experience, I toiled very hard for 4 years after graduation, I had sold mutual funds, insurance, Mediclaim policies to many investors. This period taught me to stay humble. I feel everybody should sell insurance at some point of time in their life, since it teaches you to listen, to observe, to stay humble, have gratitude and most important you sell a product to someone who is never going to eat that fruit. It’s very difficult, if you sell insurance, you can sell anything,” she says.

As her life went ahead many more hurdles came by and there are still many more to cross, lets keep it for another day, here’s a video to watch the testament of work where her company clients talk about the work ethics that she holds.

It’s important that a woman stands for a woman, many a times that’s not the case, when someone is truthful and if I can help, I still help them out, it’s in my nature , since I have gone through so much I understand pain & struggle better .

Here’s one more testament to watch:

Let’s celebrate womanhood, let there be more sunshine, until we bring out another chapter from her life some other time. Here’s wishing her and women like her a Happy Women’s Day.

Completion of ten years means a decade of hard work, it cannot be achieved without substance, let’s celebrate the women of substance today by wishing them a Happy Woman’s Day.
