Sydney: Mangalurean community celebrates Monthi Fest

Media Release

Sydney, Sep 28: The Mangalurean community in Sydney celebrated Monthi Fest on September 18 at Eric & Asha D’Silva’s residence. It was a great day for the community as families and friends came together to celebrate the feast after a break of two years due to the pandemic.

The day began with children showering flowers on Mother Mary accompanied by the hymns 'Sokkad Sangatha Melyan' and 'Moriyek Hogolsiyan'.

Introduction to the Monthi Fest celebration was given by George Pinto, a senior member of the community who was instrumental in laying the foundations for the Monthi Fest in Sydney 35 years ago and the community has been getting together to celebrate the feast ever since.

Freddie Pereira was the master of ceremony and the cultural programme was organized by Ryan Sequeira which included performances from the newly formed band singing both Konkani and English classics.

The food was delicious, home cooked by some of the families which included traditional Mangalurean dishes like sannas, channa, mung, koromb, vorn etc in addition to various other dishes.

It was a fun- filled and entertaining day bringing nostalgic memories of the Monthi Fest celebration back home.
