Ronald Colaco to Build Strong Christian Federation in Karnataka State

Feb 11, 2009

Ronald Colaco, a well known community leader, philanthropist, and a leading entrepreneur is initiating a campaign to promote political and leadership awareness among the Christian community members in the state of Karnataka.

Colaco has earned a name for himself as man for all religions, by donating for every cause.  Be it a Temple, Church, Mosque or to build  a charity organization, police station, or a house for the poor,  Colaco has helped . He is man accepted by people  of all castes, religion, or creed.

Daijiworld correspondent caught up with him and in the conversation, Colaco  shared  his views and action plans in bringing up the community.

He specifically talked about the Christian  community in the state and the need to bring about an  awareness to bring them on the  frontline without any hidden agendas or hurting the sentiments of  other communities.

"Religious leaders, parishioners and leaders of the community should stay away from internal politics and promote the laity  to take up leadership in society, in the  state and national politics in general and in the administration", he said.

Colaco said that , "It is unfortunate that the Christian community has not taken any active participation in the politics  in the past, partly due to the  lack of enthusiasm and also due to our Clergy not doing enough to  encourage them"

Colaco has an action plan to bring the community members to the forefront, specially today's youth.

Federation Christian Association (of all Christian denominations) established two years ago under the leadership of Colaco has drawn up a plan to open a Federation unit in every Taluk of the state. The 170 units would be equipped with an office,  a secretary , a computer  networking  system that that will enable all Christians of the Taluk to enroll themselves.

So far 12 Taluks, namely,Chickmagalur, Balehonnur, Koppa, Shimoga, Sakleshpur, Belur, Bangalore, udupi, Bantwal, Moodubidri - Karkal, Kolar, Badravathi have directly benefitted from this plan.

What is the Purpose of Federation?

Colaco says, unity among all community members is a prime purpose.

'Make them equally responsible for all the happenings within and outside the community. We  make them to respond effectively  against  atrocities committed against Christian Institutions, churches only  through legal actions and peaceful means."

"Creating  network to help remote villages is also another prime purpose “ he says.

Colaco  also aims to get benefits for the   Federation by obtaining all the facilities available through the minority development board & commission as per the needs of the people of each area.

He also hopes to promote the Christian community by bringing  good leadership  to the forefront,  by encouraging and supporting them to contest in the Village Panchayat, Taluk Panhyat, Dist Panchayat, Corporation, Assembly, and Parliament elections.

Colaco also went on to say that the Federation would encourage intelligent boys and girls of the Christian community to take part in the administration by qualifying themselves under KAS, IAS, IFS, IRS, IPS programmes

"There is also another  important aim  ahead  of the Federation, to coordinate and maintain cordial relations with various secular organizations by having  frequent interactions , thereby  maintaining  peace and communal harmony" he says.

Though these aims theoretically look easy, practically it will  take some time to implement. Though difficult, it is not an impossible task. Colaco who has  personally  funded  this  organization  is optimistic about the smooth progress of the federation.

"Many organizations, NGOs and even political parties have supported our views. But we are not seeking any help and support from them. This should be an  independent unit and should be run by young and capable leaders of the community " says a confident Colaco. He has himself spent a lot of time visiting the  units, talking to the youth and motivating them to promote community causes.

Ronald Colaco is a well deserved leader for this federation as he is widely accepted  by all. Being a Christian , he has shown to the world that people of all faiths can  co-exist in this country. Ever since 1991 he  has contributed to the building  and betterment of several temples like Shri Venkataramana at Tarabanahally, Bangalore North, Chamundeshwari Temple at Sadhahalli, Shiva Temple at Shringeri, and the Muneshawra Temple .he donated complete cost. Likewise his contribution has gone to  several religious places of worship. "I wish similar gestures  come from members of other communities and groups to construct few churches and mosques” he said.

When asked about the recent communal disharmony among  certain groups which led to violence in  Mangalore , Colaco sadly says ,"This kind of disharmony is created by a very small percentage of people. We should not hold the entire community  to ransom for the actions of a few unruly people.”

Mr. Colaco should be congratulated for his leadership and given every encouragement and support by everyone concerned about peaceful co-existence of people of all faiths in Karnataka. Only grass-root level leadership in the villages to stay focused on potential communcal problems will help prevent incidents that occurred in Mangalore a few months ago. His idea of encouraging Christian youth to take an active part in politics and administrative positions is long over due. It needs to be well planned and implemented.

I am really happy that Mr Ronald Colaco has come forward to start a strong Christian federation in Karnataka. Mr Colaco has a lot of bright ideas and he has been trying to implement them. We need to encourage him and also lend a helping hand.

About three months back I had a very interesting conversation with him and was very happy to know of his very proactive role in various issues relating to our society. He has bright ideas and has been trying to implement them. Regret to say that most of our young people are not motivated to get into public service and in politics.

We need to motivate and train them to get into civil services and in politics. We need to have visionaries and good leaders who really make a difference to our society work towards the uplifting of our less fortunate brethren. I wish Mr Ronald Colaco the very best. God bless.

I think there is a need to start L.L.B. in St.Aloysius College(M,lore) & St. Josephs College(B,lore). Law qualification helps a lot in political field. Majority politicians are of law background in India & around the world.Law graduates are also acceptable in other top ranking posts belonging to - police official, banking, industries, administrative bodies, govt bodies,consultancies...... Also pl. note Advocates can work in court as long as they wish without any retirement age.Recently an ADVOCATE died at the age of 90 while serving at Bombay court. It is comparatively easier among other professional degree studies.

Dear Ronald, it was time someone capable came forward with leadership. From what I read of your interview it seems you have a vision. I am sure you will get all the support from the community as we christians have now felt with the recent happenings we have to be better organised. The plan should have youth through as the older generations normally play politics rather than get on with doing work.  I hope you keep the vision clear and adhere to strict principles for all members to follow. Christians are intelligent and can and have excelled in all professions. We hope to see many IPS/IAS and political leaders from the community who are loved by all sections of society. My wishes and prayers with you.

  • Joseph F. Gonsalves , Bannur Puttur/Mangalore

    Sun, Feb 15 2009

Dear Rony Colaco, good idea. Most of the Christians have good leadership qualities but to jump in to politics is not their chair because of their truthful, humble, non-corruptive and sensitive, strait forwardness nature. This nature of Christians easily fallen prey to believe in and deceived by many even though education and agriculture led them to livelihood. I am worried that the good nature of Christians should not be spoiled by being a politician, an IAS, IFS etc., etc. The problem with present Christian community bears lack of understanding with fellow community men and women due to lack of confidence and misapprehension. First of all we all should try hard to build confidence in each other leaving behind wealth matters (Wealth matters causing grave danger in the community) and believe each other, practice and not lose patience. I appreciate your lead role and congratulate your determination to bring leaders from the community in to forefront. May God bless you and keep you close under his shadow, love and care.

A person like Ronald be admired by all the Christian community. I do agree with him about the unity of Christians and leadership among the community is lacking. Our community is under the control of clergy. We laity are not ready to invent nor to accept the persons with ability and leadership qualities as our leaders. We have enough NRI's and business community people among ourselves. If it is so we can build up our own Christian Party where ever our population is more and a good, able, responsible, non politicaly connected christian young dynamic person as our candidate to the forthcoming election. Let us show our ability and strength. Nothing is impossible if we have the courage and interest and if we are ready to work selfless. Rtd. Justice Somashekaran Commission enquiry is going to be started from Monday the 16/02/2009. Let us hope for the best verdit from the commission without any bias. And all this is possible if we are united and if we can show our strength. Mr. Colaco work towards this election w.i.e.

All this talks and messages of support in this forum is great but we need to realize we'll have to come forward to support this federation financially and all of us should join and along with our family be an active member of this federation Another important point which we need to understand is that during elections we as a community should come forward with our kids and vote so that we will not have an oppurtunity to complain like the way we did last september after the church attacks last September.

I like the approach of Mr Ronald colaco. This is the way one should go head.In order to clapping both hands should work.Like minded people also should support.Christians are christ supporters.Peace loving people. In order to survive in this world one must know how to go ahead. Our representation is very very poor inpolitical side.No representations and no leaders. That's why we are failing in many ways.We are minority community.Govt has many schemes for minority community in five years plans. No body is aware of it.We are not getting benifits out of it,where as other minority groups are availing it.Mother won't give milk unless we cry.We have developed psudo priestage. We think we are forward class people. That's why govt kept us in forward cast only. Now a days we are suffering lot.We have to wake up and try to help ourselves. One of the reader has mentioned about Bishop Pennaha of vasai diocese of mumbi state.Really his approach is good.He started basic christian community(B.C.C)and improved Vasai diocese and gave helping hands other areas also. Many places it is not continuing because of lack of support. There is saying in sanskrit"Janani janma bhumisya swargadapi gariyasi"That means our mother land is more than heaven. We have to live with harmony and peacefully.

The leader like Mr. Ronald colaco will definetely bring our divided community together to speak in one voice. Wishing good luck tom Mr. Ronald colaco and looking forward the development of this federation. In my view, one of the best solutions to combat communal and local terror, that I wished to materilise, but refrained from writing, is what mentioned by George Cruz Mangalore, USA, The important thing for the local communities e.g., Hindus, Catholics and Muslims is to discuss, negotiate and settle their differences over the important issues like terrorism (supported by SIMI group).

  • Navin Almeida, Kundapur/Goa

    Fri, Feb 13 2009

"We are continuing with our Catholic ethos and we will continue to work for and on behalf of the Catholic community to safeguard vulnerable young people and develop families,We diffinately support Mr.Ronald culaco for whatever his ideas.

  • George Cruz, Mangalore/USA

    Fri, Feb 13 2009

I agree to some extent with Dusty R., India. The important thing for the local communities e.g., Hindus, Catholics and Muslims is to discuss, negotiate and settle their differences over the important issues like terrorism (supported by SIMI group), church attacks (result of ongoing conversions) and pub attacks by rowdy elements of Ram Sene. The well known community leader Ronald Colaco can definitely contribute to this cause since he has experience in negotiating with all the three communities.

Not only this i would also encourage u to introduce some spiritual awakening stuff....like retreats councelling etc.... Go On friends ...lets make this happen...

Thanks Mr. Colaco, this kind of leadership is not there in our midst. We need these organisations for our people taking into account the present situation. People especially of our community in towns/villages do not know who to approach and how to approach the concerned authorities in power when they are in trouble. They need such organisations to help them. I would say that since the parish priests are the only approachable leaders for our people they should make people aware of these organisations and direct them when they need help.

Dear Ronald, At last someone from our Christian Community with noble thoughts and deeds. Your actions speak more than words. Christian Federation is the need of the hour. The Christian Missionary has been doing great works of charity by providing good education, health care, managing home for the aged, the destitutes regardless of caste or community. Now let us build a strong community by serving this great nation by being pro-active in politics, promote the Christian community by bringing good leadership to the forefront, by encouraging and supporting all secular minded people to contest in the Village Panchayat, Taluk Panchayat, District Panchayat, Corporation, Assembly, and Parliament elections. The Federation will move in the right direction by encouraging our clergy and our youth to take part in the administration by qualifying themselves under KAS, IAS, IFS, IRS, IPS programmes. Our support and best wishes are with you dear Ronald. We pray to God Almighty to bless you, guide you, give you the strength and courage to carry out your mission. Dear Ronald, you are doing a excellent job and may god shower you his abundant blessings upon you. As mentioned by Alexander P Menezes, Karkala/Dubai this organiztion require funds to run. Hence please publish this organizations A/C number & details so that people can help this organization in what ever financial means they can. Dear Readers, Please do not blame the clergy for our community failure in political arena. What is clergy they to arrived from our society, they may be one of our brother, sister or a friend. It is our entire christian communitities luke warn interest and enthusiasm is the cause we have marginal or NIL representation in politics. (None of my even farest relatives or any friends are in clergy community but remember we need to overcome our internal disputes in order to succeed)

  • Walter Saldanha, Mangalore, India

    Thu, Feb 12 2009

Dusty R.seems to be having a broader vision, and Kevin suggests a concrete step to raise funds and both are essential. What I suggest is to have a Christian Federation only for Christians but simultaneously to have a political wing comprising of moderate and cultured people of Hindus, Muslims, dalits and all other minorities. Prior to this christian federation needs to establish itself. May be Mr. John Dayal of Delhi could be consulted, if needed.

I am not only impressed but also overwhelmed from the initiative taken by none other than a selfless leader of all communities Mr.Ronald Colaco for the safety, security and benefit of Christian community and their institutions. Having known him personally and heard from others specially from Mr.Felix Dsouza of Bombay and Denis D’silva of Mlore he has no interest whatsoever in the politics for himself and has turned down politely 3 offers in the past, to take up MLC from Congress, Rajya Sabha membership offer from JDS and Congress combined and recently a minister’s post (just an offer) from BJP delegates.

I understand that his aim is only to support and bring those youngsters of Christian community with leadership qualities to the forefront by contesting elections from Village Panchayat, Taluk and District Panchayat, City Corporation, Legistlative Assembly and Lok Sabha to have due and adequate representation at all levels which can self support you to our problems to a great extent. Therefore I am encouraged to pledge my financial support for one of these Federation units at one of the Taluks at least which I understand from Mr.Denis D’silva who has been deputed to work on this mission that it would cost around Rupees 2.5 lakhs. I request the Federation of the Karnataka Christian Associations to contact me with more details in this regard.

Any candidate who wishes to go ahead for the any category we can use this fund for that purpose

Christianity is a religion of brotherhood, multiplex and not individualistic. We have to set a example of secularism by taking the lead, to make federations of like minded Muslims-Hindus- and chritians together. Needs and views of the moderate - Hindus - Muslims and christians are the same. Federations based on seperate religions have not been a success in the past nor will be in the future. Let there be united federatrions to fight the common enemies

Overwhelming support from the readers in this forum. Agree with the readers that we should support the cause, but sitting in a distant places its not possible. The federation needs to run and to run the federation successfully the funds are required. If we cannot take part in this federation actively due to our work related commitments, we still can make this federation a big success by helping to run this  financially. We cannot expect Mr. Colaco to put his money in to this and run this federation for us, that will be a selfish expectation. I hope each one of us understands what it takes to run such a an organization and difficulties to run in present political circumstances. One of the well respected writer in this forum has wisely criticized our clergy's role in grooming a catholic leaders at the grass root level. I kind of agree with his views as we grow up to certain level in our catholic organizations, but when it comes to growing further up, we tend to lose  support from our clergy for various reasons.. I wish all the very best to Mr. Colaco, in his selfless mission to uplift our Catholic community and pray to almighty to give him and his organization all the strength and courage to lead from the front.

The laity are weak and not united outside the Church.  It is right time to put an end to this type of leadership and the Christian Community should grow outside the Church independently. Federation of Christian Association should take all steps to unite the Associations which are working outside the Church. Secondly, most of the people who read this article have wished Mr. Colaco all success. We want action from the like minded people. Those who are well off have to start contributing to the FCA to make it strong. I strongly feel that funds collected from the Community will be fully secured with Mr. Colaco. Let the monetary help flow to the various programmes of the Associaltion. J. Rego

Having known Mr Ronald Colaco very closely for more than 25 years, I know what good he has done to the society irrespective of religion, cast and creed. He has sacrificed more of his time, energy & money for others than for himself and his family. I cannot compare his good deeds to anyone's.

We have in society people who are wealthy and who do not share. They do not spend for themselves too. These people should atleast take an example of Mr Colaco's good deeds. Be it Orphanages, Educational institutions, Educational expenses of individuals, poor families, Medical expenses of the needy, Requirement of building/renovation of Temples, Mosques or Churches,Schools, roads,Public buildings,Cultural activities etc, etc & etc (the list is never ending) his finanacial help and support was,is and always there.

May God give him the strength, health and bless him with more and more prosperity to enable him to continue his good work in times to come. I appreciate the good work done by Daijiworld in bringing out this Exclusive article which I hope and wish will inspire others.

"It is better to light a candle than curse darkness". We Mangalorean Christians have been excelling in all the areas all over the world except in politics. May be due to lack of interest, lack of opportunity or lack of inspiration. A few more reasons are there, it is up to each one to introspect. We need a break, may it be women or men there is no dirth for leadership qualities among Mangaloreans. We the christians are imparting best of the education in the country, and now it is time for us to serve our country politically and economically. Mr. Colaco, First of all we shall thank to God for giving you this wonderful vision and leadership. Let the peaceful coexistence of all communities be the guiding principle of this organization. We will pray to ALMIGHTY for His leading, guidance and effectiveness of this organization. I have two suggestions: (1) Kindly start and publish offices in coastal Karnataka at the earliest so that we too participate & support this noble cause. (2)I suggest to allow clergy/religious leaders as advisors only but NOT as the office bearers. Finally let Ephesians 6:10-18 be the guiding verses for the organization. Let righteousness overcome the darkness. God Bless you and the organization and its noble causes.

Mr. Ronald Colaco please see that your Federation can educate 30 to 5o christian boys to become good lawyers in karnataka state evey year and then as the years go by increase it to 300 to 500 so that our christian community may have some one to help them in their need and not get looted and cheated. if you have noted we do not have a good judicial system and not enough christian lawyers cases taking years to come to justice and poor and weaker christian's who cannot effort to fight their cases loose, cause of lack of fund not of right help these people first...... I think this is the first step you must take up and it is urgent. any way hope u may do some thing for the community and wish u all the best may the blessing of the lord be with u and what ever u do we are always there in prayer and thought

    Wed, Feb 11 2009

Dear friends, In the history of Christian Community of Mangalore, I have not come across any self made political leader except Mr. George Fernandes. The rest are all puppets of the Congress Party or some other God Fathers. Firstly, it is indeed true that the Clergy is the main obstacle for the Christian youth to come up at the grass root level. They will educate the youth and encourage leadership to the level of Parish Council vice-president, ICYM, Sodality, Catholic Sabha etc but when the time comes to demonstrate the real community leadership, Clergy is the first one to pull their legs. It is well known fact that there is no democracy in the formation of Parish Councils in which the President's post is always reserved. Secondly, Catholic community with its distinct social and cultural identity is largely responsible for its ethnic isolation in the increasingly intolerant society. Consequently, the most appropriate description of Christian youth with political aspirations is "Dhobi Kutha na gharka na ghatka" Regards Lawrence Saldanha, Kanajar

Don't curse the darkness, but light a candle in the darkness. "The world will never have lasting peace so long as men reserve for war the finest human qualities. Peace, no less than war, requires idealism and self-sacrifice and a righteous and dynamic faith" John Foster Dullas. "Peace is our final good" St. Augustine. "Where there is peace, God is". George Herbert. Peace hath her victories No less nenown'd than war" John Milton. "Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the Children of God" Jesus said. I heard a lot about Colaco and he is admired by people cutting across religion and politics. He is a gentleman, has a good heart and empathizes with people. I wish him success in his endeavor. I would like to pen down couple of thoughts here. There is clearly a lack of enthusiasm, guidance and exposure to youth - especially christian.

Each and every educated person must take keen interest in developing young men and women for the future. They must avail world-class education which is absolutely paramount. Unless you posses intellectual curiosity, this world will be a hell for all of us. There is need for resource-people who work in frontier areas of science, technology, arts and commerce and every faculty of human thought. This would make the youth decide upon their careers.

Also internet is playing a huge role in learning. It has already taken the role of a global library. There are plenty of education-related websites which always stimulate the intellectual growth of our mind. We need to come out of our shells and see the world and get thrilled with the might and glory of nature. Let us help our brethren in whatever way possible to realize a peaceful and growing society.

Politics has reached its lowest level in human ethics. It is better the christian community stays clear  of it. It is ok to support christian canditates on an Individual level, but not on a community level, which will not be practical, with different ideologies even among christians. Let christians lead through good example and not through dirty politics.

I disagree that clergy has discouraged people from politics. Some of the big leaders at the national and state level are in fact Mangalorean Catholics like George Fernandes, Oscar Fernandes, Margaret Alva, Late Blasius Dsouza and administrators like the late  Fr Jerome Dsouza SJ etc. The Mangalorean Catholic community is more organised and vibrant . Whether in numerous social activities, games or social service I do not think of any community that can come close. Many laymen take active part in church activities and attribute good leadership too. However making a career in politics is entirely a personal option.

Nice to know about your plan and wishing you all the best and assuring you all the support from us.We christian are silent workers and silently developing the community or society. I feel we are not good in public demonstration like in all other community.  For politics we require to speak publicly and demonstrate of our activities. same way we will have to encourage our children for politics where as we never encourage for politics at all.

Today you ask any youth they want to become only engineers, doctors or any white collar job. i feel we will have to work very systematically using our institution and taking confidence to our religious leader.

If religious leaders recommend their favourites to the political party leadears it will damage the grass root workers of the parties ,to avoid direct interference of the religious leaders your interest in this subject will encourage the real party workers of our community.

Our chritian boys and girls are not studying this type of cources due to lack of facilitieis in village level. Federation should take this challenge. A great idea from a great leader ! One of the few successful Christian leaders of our country, Ronald Colaco should be supported by all well meaning people in this noble venture. He should be given full support by each and every soul of our country since this Federation will eventually become an umbrella to protect people from all religions. That will be the day when we will not have any clashes between people. We have so many successful and wealthy Christians who should come forward and join hands with Ronald Colaco. May be some of them can adopt individual units set up and look after the progress following the rules laid down strictly. It is unfair to expect Ronald Colaco to bear the brunt single handedly and unless and until everyone comes forward with their openness and response the job will not be complete. The need of the hour is to quickly raise and support the Federation while simultaneously promising unreserved support for the programme. We need more Christians in the forefront of our country's governance and when there are more of our own in the various cadres like KAS, IAS, IFS, IRS, IPS services everything will be fine. Hope Ronald Colaco will contest in the forthcoming elections as well.

And fight for justice for all the injustice and harm done to our people, our community and our churches. Everbody is not a leader, but a true leader in this hour of need is the one who fights for the rights of the people. Wish good luck to Ronald Colaco in his endevor to build strong Christian Federation in Karnataka. Hope to see RC as CM one day. Hope to join the Mangalore group if itstarts one day.

Wishing Rony Colaco the very best. Someone like Mr. Colaco must be fully supported for his good cause. I am sure under his leadership the Catholic community will benefit largely. Quite often Catholic community is at the receiving end. All catholic community in Karnataka state and around the world must come forward in support of Mr. Colaco.

Mr. Ronald Colaco Wish you good luck and I am sure you will lead the community to great hieghts. I have one request can your organisation look into the Murder Of one Youth Rickshaw driver Murdered in Nithayadhar Nagar thokut Mangalore by youths and the murderes are aquited becuase of Poltical support to them. This left the young widow and 3 year old son to suffer. No Christian organisation or Bishop( Clergy's)never helped in getting justice. This is how our christian are negelected and there is no unity unless we help our community in need . Please look into this and also help to get her justice.. I hope this message will be put by Daiji.com so that people will read and come forward to help. This is sincere request and true incident.

Everbody is not a leader, but a true leader in this hour of need is the one who fights for the rights of the people. As far as participation in politics by people from our community, some people were & are still around in politics, Unfortunately they are useless, selfish and good for nothing. Wish good luck to Ronald Colaco in his endevor to build strong Christian Federation in Karnataka. Hope to see RC as CM one day.
