First Dalit Archbishop Marampudi Joji of Hyderabad Passes Away

The Hindu

Hyderabad, Aug 28: The Archbishop of Hyderabad and a popular Christian leader, Marampudi Joji, passed away around 6 pm on Friday following a heart attack in his personal chamber in the Bishop's House at Secunderabad.

His personal aides and a few priests present in the house, to their shock, found him dead in his chair. He was 68. Rev. Joji, a hallmark of piety and social service to the poor wherever he worked, leaves behind thousands of admirers all over the State and a large congregation.

His body will be laid to rest in the cemetery at the foot of St Mary's shrine at Gunadala in Vijayawada around 3 pm on Monday as per his wish indicated in a document. This cemetery is the resting place of several early Italian missionaries who worked in this part of the globe.

A spokesman of the Bishop's House said the body would be kept at St Mary's Church, Secunderabad, throughout Saturday and partially on Sunday to enable people pay their respects to him before being shifted to Vijayawada for the funeral. Soon after hearing the news, a large number of people thronged the house for the last glimpse.

Sorry to hear about the death of archbishop Joji. He was a man of integrity who cared for the well-being of the flock assigned to him. Meanwhile, I felt very sad to read the comment of 'abrham, mangalore.' Why speak negatively about the deceased archbishop while the entire diocese of Hyderabad mourning over his death? How come anyone can fail to be manganous? May God grant bishop Joji eternal rest. RIP.

A great man passed away. under his able guidance and supervision many parishes were formed in the and around the twin cities, whereby catholic living in such areas gottheir shepherds, and regular worship and Eucharistic services are available to them. In one such episode as the Immaculate Heart of Mary's church at Ghatkesar in the out skirts during construction and inauguration he had posted very intelligently a very young and dynamic priest Rev Fr. Joseph Kondala from the MSFS order as parish priest and the old chapel was demolished and a new beautiful and and modern Church was constructed within the prescribed time limit.

The late bishop, secretly and regularly visited the premises at odd hours to assess the progress. by then he already had his CABG (bypass grafting)with all his ailment he was traveling the long distance to ensure the progress was as per schedule. His presence in the rural parish brought confidence to the local parishioners. he brought many changes in the archdiocese by transferring the corrupt and stubborn priests. He faced many criticism one such talk by a priest from the pulpit was recorded by me. It was not a pleasing talk. However the Bishop no longer lives in our midst, he was called Home I pray to the Almighty God to shorten his time of expiation and take him into his kingdom where he will live eternally standing in the presence of God singing His praises, glories and mercies. May his soul rest in peace.

I was shocked to hear the sudden demise of the Archbishop of Hyderabad, Most Rev. Marampudi Joji. He was a simple, pro-poor and man of God in the church of Andra Pradesh. As he hails from the dalit christian community, he is the first Archbishop from the Dalit christianins, in the Catholic Church. He was the voice of the poor dalits to get their rights.

He was able to support the cause of dalit liberation and SC status to Dalit Christians both at the church level and the government level. There is no such a leader to succedd him to support the cause of the poor dalits in the church and in the state. The Catholic Church in as well as the Dalit christians have lost their good shephered. I hope that the Lord will give the archdiocese of Hyderabad a shephered after His own heart ( Jer 3,15).

The title "Dalit" must be the making of media. In the assembly of all who are related to Christ by his blood are his brothers. Worldly segregations have no meaning.

Why you differntiate between christians. As per I know there is no caste system within christians.

Recently, I read an interview of present chief election commisioner Mr Qureshi who didnt like media for reporting him as a first muslim to become CEC. I agree that he is appointed as a CEC because of merit and not due to the religion he belongs. We should not unnecessarily bring in religious and caste to issue.

May Archbishop Marampudi Joji's soul RIP...

I was sad to read the news. Not only I knew him -along with Archbishop Arulappa he Ordained me as a priest at Andhra Loyola College, Vijayawada in 1999, but I appreciate his commitment to the integral development of the poor. Earlier, as bishop of Khammam, he visited the Adivasi communities beyond Bhadrachalam and wholeheartedly supported the Jesuit-run projects for the education of these people. May his soul Rest In Peace!

May the dear departed Soul of H.E Archbishop Marampudi Rest in Peace. With regard to mentioning him as Dalit Bishop to show to the world and our christrian community who still follow castism in some parts of our country, that there is no bar for anyone to enter the vinyard of our Lord Jesus Christ and to encourage other Dalits and downtrodden to follow our Lord Jesus Christ. Why disect and bisect each and every news item? instead save the time and energy for upliftment of people as this beloved Archbishop did during his lifetime.
