'FlyFromIXE' campaign launched by Twitter users for development of Mangaluru airport

Mangaluru, Sep 15: Mangaluru is the main city of coastal Karnataka and a major commerical centre of the state, connected by land, sea, air and rail routes. The Mangaluru International Airport here has been growing in terms of facilities and passenger footfall, however, recent developments such as closure of Jet Airways and the opening of Kannur airport in Kerala have had heavy adverse impact on flight services at the city's airport.

Now, even as coronavirus pandemic continues to affect the travel industry, a Twitter campaign has been launched to boost the overall development of Mangaluru International Airport. The campaign is being held on Tuesday September 15 at 6 am to 6 pm with the hashtags #FlyFromIXE (IXE being Mangaluru airport's code), tagging to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the civil aviation ministry and the minister Hardeep Singh Puri, and Airport Authority of India.

The campaign has been launched by a group of young aviation enthusiasts from Mangaluru, and also includes young people from Bantwal, Puttur and other areas.

There is a dedicated 'Mangalore International Airport Users' page on Twitter which is carrying on the campaign to popularise the airport, along with making requests and suggestions for introduction of new services at the airport.

"Mangalore which is an important, major and fast growing city in Karnataka has Karnataka's second international and largest airport. IXE is the first airport in Karnataka to have 2 runways. When @jetairways Was serving IXE there were flights to Del and different cities (sic)," the page tweeted.

"But now, there less than 20 flights per day, when it was around 70 per day," it added.

A member of page, who did not wish to be named, told daijiworld, "Mangaluru is known as an educational hub and students come from various parts of the country to study here. It will help these students if there are more flight services. Mangaluru airport deserves companies like Air Asia, Kuwait Airways, Vistara and others. There is a demand to start flight services from Mangaluru to various cities such as New Delhi, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Pune, Belagavi, Jammu, Vishakapatnam, Thiruvanthapuram, Agatti, Port Blair, Mysuru, Singapore, Bangkok and to provide all facilities to Mangaluru airport under UDAAN yojana."

"Even the tax on aviation turbine fuel imposed by Karnataka government is more than that by Kerala government, which will effect the airline services in Mangaluru, and many airlines step back for this reason. Hence Kannur airport is preffered more than Mangaluru airport. The government is giving more importance to Kannur airport and neglecting Mangaluru airport," he said.

The organizers have asked the people to send tweets with the above mentioned hashtags seeking to bring Mangaluru airport under the Udaan scheme.

Very sad that in the year 1991 there was a proposal to build greenfield airport near Padubidri( half way Udupi Mangalore) an approach was made by a well known person to build a world class International Airport in PPP model, Mangalore builders Lobby stock.. Politics played and project scrapped. Now a coal based power station built which is harm to environment 90% power produced tapped to Bangalore/Hassan(DK given land Power went to Hassan). Now in Kannur Airport Airline fuel tax is just 1% but state Govt tax in IXE Mangalore is 28% which is the main reason for high ticket price in Mlr, Looking at drastic passenger fall, Its imminent that one day Mangalore left with a single flight from Bangalore,Mumbai.

We always Vote and elect very intelligent peoples representatives deserve this

Lately we all heard news like Kasaragod or Kerala passport holders were harassed by airport authorities .News start circulating very badly and custom officers started discriminating, tearing passports, and lot more.
Luckily at the same time Kannur airport started functioning and almost all flights from gulf started landing in Kannur.
Now people from Kasaragod prefer Kannur than ixe.I have seen many Mangalorean's also prefer Kannur. i think its the attitude of airport officials which irked passengers.

    good luck ixe!!!!

Mangalore will continue to lose out if its people are not serious about the deliberate reduction by Central Govt of its importance. Airlines will only add flights when there are passengers. Head offices of 2 nationalised banks are shifted out of Mangalore, Obviously it will have an impact on the air traffic, rentals in Mangalore city and hotel occupancy. Now the IT office shifting to Goa is another attempt. And this is being done by a party which has won all Lok Sabha elections from Mangalore from 1991!

Slowly all neighbouring regions will march ahead of Mangalore as we have been taken for granted. Other than the "dreams" shown of Smart City, just try to remember one thing that the Central Govt did for Mangalore in last 6 years.

I will be happy to fly from Calicut or Cannoor and come to Mangalore by train as the 2-way far is cheaper there. Even there are international flights from different airlines. Also, there is less checking in these airports compared to IXE.

So why "Fly by IXE" when I can get cheaper fare as well as near to Madikeri, Kasargod, and Mangalore or by train to Udipi. Last year lot of people travelled to Canoor- Mangalore for Christmas and it will be same this year also.

While the MIA is almost developed it is equally important to ensure that there are bus services to distant places like Udupi and Puttur as well as the nearby railway station should also be upgraded with better road connectivity from the airport, for passengers traveling to Kundapur and beyond.

Airport Manager - IXE and Airport Operator - Adani
First of all, do not allow airlines to arbitrarily drop scheduled flights at drop of hat. People will vouch that most of the time BOM-IXE or IXE-BOM flights have reasonable occupancy rates. But specially Air India drops their flights during peak season to accommodate some of the sectors which central government wants to subsidize. They can dry/wet lease aircraft for these sector/s rather than withdrawing these well established flights.
Also, flights can be spread throughout the day even after taking overseas flights arrival either at BOM or BLR and give reasonable transit time to provide good connectivity since now almost all flights are merged to one terminal.
Now is time to allow international flights from at least GCC countries to fly to Mangalore because they have busted government myth that only Indian carriers' pilots are capable of landing on table-top runways. Almost all GCC carriers have now landed without any hitch during monsoon season, thus exposing their shadow screens the government officials/Indian carriers had created.

Very rightly summarized Mr. Castelino. It is high time that the Middle East carriers be given landing rights into IXE. The price of flying into or from IXE would also get rationalized and the dominance of Air India would be challenged, apart from providing seamless onward connectivity to other desitnations. I am sure carriers like Fly Dubai or Air Arabia would be keen to fly.

Southern railway is going to shift ‘goods shed’ from old Bunder area to Ullal. Shifting from Old Bunder area is a good move, however it should have been shifted somewhere near to New Mangalore port area. By shifting to Ullal area, southern railway under Tamil/ mallus will be in full control of ‘goods shed’.
