Bridgetown, Jul 24: West Indies head coach Darren Sammy has revealed that fast bowler Alzarri Joseph turned down selection for the upcoming two-Test home series against Pakistan, describing the decision as a significant setback for the team.

Speaking ahead of the opening Test, Sammy said Joseph, who is returning from injury, had been selected but chose not to be part of the squad. Cricket West Indies had earlier stated that the pacer was unavailable due to personal reasons.

“Alzarri Joseph has declined selection. He was selected, but for reasons beyond my control, he decided not to accept it. The matter is now with the board and directors,” Sammy said.

Joseph, who has claimed 130 wickets in 42 Tests, has been a key member of the West Indies pace attack across formats.

Despite his absence, Sammy expressed confidence in his bowling unit, which includes Shamar Joseph, Kemar Roach, Jayden Seales, Justin Greaves, Keemo Paul, spinner Jomel Warrican, debutant Joshua Bishop and captain Roston Chase.

Sammy said the current attack has the ability to claim 20 wickets in a Test match, pointing to the team's bowling performances against Australia and New Zealand as evidence of its strength.

He also backed the batting unit to deliver consistently after showing encouraging signs in the recent Test series against Sri Lanka.

The first Test against Pakistan begins on Saturday, while the second match will be played in Port of Spain from August 2.
