Bantwal: Landslide in Vittal - Three labourers killed, one injured

Bantwal, Dec 7: Three labourers died and one sustained serious injuries in a landslide that took place in Odiyoor near Kanyana, in Vittal, on Saturday, December 7.

The deceased have been identified as Vitla Kasaba village, Alangar resident Balappa Naika (56), Manila village, Muruva resident Prakash (38) and Vitla Padnur village, Kaup Majalu resident Ramesh (50).

Kuthar, Ullal resident Prabhaker suffered injuries. The deceased and the injured were shifted to Deralakatte K S Hegde Hospital.

 

The labourers were digging a hillock and preparing the land for the construction of a building. An excavator also was also excavating the hillock. Suddenly, a landslide occurred and mud came crashing down.

The labourers who were working near the foot of the hillock were buried under mud.

The rescue efforts started immediately. A fire engine was called.

Vittal police station inspected the accident spot. A case is registered.

    These types of landslides will become more frequent in DK due to rampant land reclamation by cutting hills w/o building structurally strong retainer walls; reminds one of what happened in Kodagu, Madikeri etc.!!

    The normal modus operandi of these contractors to save money and time is to excavate the bottom of the hillock with JCB and keep overnight. By next day naturally the top portion of the hillock will collapse. Sometimes this type of mishap occurs. RIP for the deceased poor employees.
