Mangaluru, Aug 6: Kalyanmayee unit of Airport Authority of India (AAI), Mangaluru International Airport (MIA), conducted awareness campaign on menstrual hygiene here at Sri Narayana Guru Sabhagraha Permude on Monday, August 6, under the CSR initiative of AAI.

Social Worker from Prajna Counselling centre Reshma who was the key speaker said, “Menstruation starts at the age of 12 to 14 or after 14 years. In some places, women are not supposed to go out and they are not supposed to touch anyone during menstruation. There will be lot of restrictions for the children during the menstruation period, which is not right. We should not make them feel stressed. They should feel free and comfortable during that period.”

She further said, “Sanitary napkin pads should not be used for more than eight hours. Make sure that your inner wear is also changed. A few of them may prefer cloth pads which should be avoided. Using sanitary napkins is good to maintain hygiene and is also comfortable.”

“We should dispose the sanitary napkins by wrapping them in paper. Maintaining health and hygiene during menstruation is very important,” she added.

Kalyanmayee will install sanitary napkin vending machines in schools to provide sanitary napkins for girls at an affordable price. Kalyanmayee is also educating women about the benefits of using sanitary napkins through camps.

Meanwhile, sanitary pads were distributed to the gram panchayath members and locals of Permude.

This is the third awareness camp organised by Kalyanmayee. Earlier they had organised camps at government women’s polytechnic college, Bondel and Government women's college at Jyothi on July 19 and 20 respectively.

Co-ordinator of Kalyanmayee and PA to airport director Hazel Concessao welcomed the gathering.

President of Kalyanmayee Sujana Rao, Anganwadi teacher Vijayalaxmi, gram Panchayath president Saroja, medical representatives Meena and Divya were present.
