US mounts massive naval blockade on Iran, deploys 100+ aircraft and warships

Washington, Apr 17: The United States has intensified its military posture in West Asia, launching a large-scale maritime blockade targeting Iran’s ports and coastline, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed on Thursday.

The operation involves more than 10,000 personnel, over a dozen naval vessels, and upwards of 100 aircraft deployed across regional waters to enforce the blockade.

CENTCOM stated that the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) is currently operating in the Arabian Sea as part of the mission. It clarified that the blockade is limited to Iranian ports and coastal areas and does not extend to the Strait of Hormuz.

“US forces are not blockading the Strait of Hormuz. More than 10,000 American service members, 12+ ships, and 100+ aircraft are enforcing the blockade, ensuring that no vessels violate the President’s proclamation,” the command said.

In a separate update, CENTCOM said sailors aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Delbert D Black (DDG 119) are maintaining strict vigilance, monitoring and intercepting vessels attempting to enter or leave Iranian waters.

US President Donald Trump described the operation as effective, stating, “We’re doing very well with the blockade. It’s very routine for us. No ship is even thinking about entering.”

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Air Force Gen. Dan Caine, reiterated that the blockade applies to all ships regardless of nationality heading to or from Iranian ports. He emphasised that enforcement will take place within Iran’s territorial waters as well as in international waters, but not in the Strait of Hormuz.

The move comes amid escalating tensions in West Asia, with global powers increasing military deployments and diplomatic efforts to manage the volatile situation.
