GVOM-6: 12 aspiring singers enter semi-finals after scintillating Muscat prelims

Muscat, May 30: Mangalurean Konkani wing of Indian Social Club (ISC) here, held its mega event ‘Alpha 2018’ at the multipurpose hall of Indian Social Club, Darsait, on May 25. The preliminary round of Gulf Voice of Mangalore - Season 6 was also held which witnessed an overwhelming response.

As many as 21 participants from Oman marched into the hall with title song of GVOM. Mariete Fernandes and Dolly Gomes lead the procession with the trophies.

Jessie Vivian Pereira introduced the judges for the preliminary round while Mariete Fernandes read the rules of the competition. Judges of the competition were Vincent Rodrigues, Preema Lavina D’Souza and Arun Aloysius Patrao.

Vincent Rodrigues is a well-known lead and bass guitarist from Dubai. He has the fame of working with well known musicians and singers like Dr P B Srinivas, Suresh Wadkar, the late Wilfy Rebimbus and many more. 

Preema Lavina D’Souza is a noted singer who has judged many international singing competitions. She has won the Pratibha Puraskar Award from Mandd Sobhann in 1993 and Best Female Singer Award at the GCC Level Desert Konkani Music Awards organized by Little Flowers Mukamar.

Arun Aloysius Patrao is a self taught musician, who likes western pop, country music and rock songs. He has also been a lead guitarist for Kannada movies and Konkani music albums.

The judges presented a scintillating performance. Vincent Rodrigues sang ‘Yore Pavsa Yo’ while Preema D’Souza mesmerized the crowd with her Goan Konkani song and Arun Patrao entertained the crowd with some famous English numbers supported by Oman’s famous guitarist Robert D’Souza.

Dilip Correa rendered the vote of thanks and expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the show.

All the participants of the competition were presented with a certificate of participation by Clarence Pinto and the newly elected president of MCCP Ajith Walder.

Dolly Gomes, Ajith D’Costa, Jessie Vivian Pereira and John Gonsalves took the charge of time keeping and marks tabulations .The breath taking moment of announcing the results was done by Dilip Correa and Clarence Pinto handed over a trophy to each of the winners.


The 12 participants who walked into the semi-final round of the GVOM Season 6 from Oman are:

Female category: Anita Lobo, Dr Amanda Lobo, Inez Lobo, Renita D’Souza, Zeena Maria D’Souza and Lavisha Rubina Sequeira

Male category: Zino Michael Saldanha, Pradeep Alexander Michael, Cyril Danthy, Vincent D’Souza, Jason Avinash Cardoza and Deepak D’Souza

The hall was beautifully decorated by Lancy Lobo and team, DJ Loveline took full control of the music of the show, back stage was managed by Naveen Mascarenhas with the help of Trescilla Menezes, Raphael D’Souza and Sunil D’Souza. Joachim D’Souza handled photography. The sound system was provided by Talentz and managed by Richard.

Earlier in the programme, ‘Alpha 2018’ was inaugurated by ISC which marked the inception of a new episode in the history of the Mangalurean Konkani community in Oman. The ISC is a body which caters to the social, cultural, sporting and intellectual needs of the community of non-resident Indians residing in the Sultanate of Oman. The new wing of Indian Social Club, Oman, was conceived in order to take care of the cultural and social needs of the Mangalurean Konkani community in Oman.

Dr Satish Nambiar, the chairman of the Indian Social Club, was the chief guest of the programme. He was welcomed with a floral bouquet by Clarence Pinto and Dilip Correa.

Lavina D’Sa compered the day’s programme which commenced with an instrumental prayer song played by Liza D’Sa and Laura D’Sa.

Convener Clarence Pinto welcomed the gathering and also put forward the motto of the newly formed wing. The Indian Social Club - Mangalurean Konkani wing (ISC-MWK) was formally inaugurated by Dr Satish Nambiar and all the executive committee members of the wing by the traditional lighting of the lamp. Dr Satish Nambiar then addressed the gathering and welcomed the members of the new wing into the ISC family.

An entertainment programme was then presented by the members and their families.

Konkan Steps and Beats presented a traditional dance which consisted Calida Simona Machado, Christine Angelin Danthy, Lovette Rachel Rego, Reia Caron Correa, Rochelle Catrina Correa, Grace Martina Menezes, and Glen Alexie Menezes. The dance was choreographed by Calida Simona Machado.

A welcome song that was specially created for the day by renowned composer and musician Apolinaris D’Souza was presented by his team. It brought out the sentiments that all have towards Mangalurean community.

Little children from the group of Twinkling Stars danced to the tune of ‘Kinkule’. It was presented by Anisha Jeslita Dcosta, Tania Saldanha, Michelle Treza Pinto, Ashvita Coutinho, Delishya Maria D’Souza, Laura D’Sa, and Gloria Barboza. It was choreographed by Lizzy Barboza.

A traditional skit ‘Gurkaramachi Bolaiki’ that depicted the traditional ‘Portapon’ ceremony was presented by Lancy Lobo, Anitha Lobo, Andril Lobo, Alwin Pinto, Sujatha Pinto, Babli, Melwin Menezes, Ashok Pinto, Roshini Pinto, John Mathias, Naveen Sequirea, Merlin Sequiera, Madelin Sequeira, Cyril Danthy, Antitha Danthy, Mary Monteriro, Shanti D’Souza, Shavin D’Souza, Vikas, Ivan Moras, Aldrean Moras, Praveen Pinto, Helen Sequiera and Eugene Sequiera. It was directed by Lancy Lobo.

Alston Moras and Megan D’Souza presented a dazzling duet dance.
