Mangaluru: NHAI proposes to convert B C Road-Suratkal highway into six-lane

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Feb 26: It is gathered that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has submitted a proposal to the union ministry of road transport and highways, recommending to convert the current four-lane highway between B C Road and Suratkal into six-lane highway. The proposed width of the road is 60 metres as against the current 30 to 35 metres, and bridges too are proposed to be widened, and new underpasses have been proposed. The highway will also have two-lane service road on both sides. The length of the stretch proposed to be developed is 37 km.

The authority wants to widen the road in view of increased density of traffic on this stretch of the highway. The estimated cost of this new project is Rs 925 crore and the department will begin processes relating to highway widening once the proposal sent now gets the ministry's green signal.

Out of the above, the seven km stretch between Bykampady and Kuntikan is proposed to be concreted as this stretch has been identified as getting affected by waterlogging during rainy season under which circumstances, asphalted roads do not last. The current highway as well as service roads flanking it will also be concreted if the ministry gives clearance.

At the same time, it is learnt that the construction of a flyover has been recommended near KPT at Kadri in the city. If everything goes on smoothly and procedures move swiftly, the project may undergo tendering process during the next year. Underpasses have been proposed near Suratkal Vidyadayini school, Honnakatte Junction at Kulai and Panambur junction. A new six-lane bridge has been recommended at Kulur between the two bridges currently functional. Once the new bridge materializes, the existing two bridges will be treated as service roads, it is learnt.

First and foremost let the Public and the Tax payers know who has requisitioned six lane between B.C Road and Surathkal ??? We have seen the acumen of NHAI dealing with the contractors who are still struggling to complete the work. Let them finish the present ongoing project with perfection. Then let us visualise 6 lane.

Once i asked a Civil Engineer who works on these project, why the Govt. is not employing engineers who know their work. the flyovers in mangalore look like they are building by hand. they look century old before they are complete. they fall down while building, they are cooked, levels are bad, workmanship is absolutely crap. the same engineers, outside india are known to be one of the best. who will ensure quality? clean ministers, clean work. a corrupt minister who will take a cut, cannot implement discipline, quality. foreign companies, consultants if allowed, quality may come. bet you, if there is no 'FAIDA' being a minister, MP or MLA, these posts soon will become vacant with no takers. Jai Hind.

Its a crude joke by authorities. The existing four lane road managluru to bc road is not given a final touch yet or i will not say its completed despite the toll gates are operating very efficiently without any given break, for that matter it was built overnight.

The years taken to incomplete road of BC Road around 35 years which is a quite impressive achievement ( stretch of merely around 25 km ) !!

I don't know how these idiot officer's are thinking. If they announce new road plan then existing contract will be terminated and remaining works will be deemed cancelled. Then present contractor will settle this issue with NHAI with some adjustment and they will clear from all burden. If new road as proposed is implemented then some of the city itself is vanished like surathkal,Baikampady,Farangipete etc.Instead they should think some bypass road like Mulky-Muluru-BC road. BC road-Kairangala-Thokkottu to reduce traffic.

''NHAI proposes to convert B C Road-Suratkal highway into six-lane''

If you look at the current stretch right now ... some parts still look incomplete eg, railway bridge at baikampady. Do you people know when did current stretch start their work?? it was around 2003 - 2004. i think the kottara flyover took around 8 years to complete!!! and its badly designed like surathkal and BC road flyovers. only the flyover near AJ hospital is proper one though its parallel roads are badly designed.

I visited Mangalore recently... that let me tell you that there are literally hundreds of potholes on that road. This is what we get for the road in India. well, i should not say India because I have traveled within India and I believe we have the worst ill-planned modern roads. if you people don't believe me please for once travel from Bangalore to Madras through the national highway. When you pass the Karnataka-Tamilnadu border you will notice the difference. I bet you it is a huge difference in the quality of work. Tamil Nadu road in on par with international standards.

I believe this new six-lane proposal is nothing but a creation of another opportunity to make money for politicians and middlemen( since many might have lost their money through demonetization). they will take another 15-20 years to complete and in that time we have to suffer traveling during the construction phase. I know for sure that it will be another ill-planned substandard road. And not only that, most of the business and property owners will try to change the plan by contacting their corrupt buddy politicians to save their respective properties being claimed by the NHAI.

The present flyovers near Kuntikhan, Kottar chowki, Kulur and Surathkal look like ancient ruins of Hampi....................This is the quality of our new roads. 90% commission and only 10% of the funds used for actual construction.

Each time you pass by these so called flyovers you feel ashamed. Indian companies like L&T and Shapoorji Pallonji are building ultra modern world class bridges and roads overseas, but are not utilized to build our in house infrastructure. Most of the bridges and roads in India are built by relatives of politicians. Therefore the quality of our roads will never improve.

First let them provide a road which is good in condition. Let the authority take measurement where 2 big buses pass at a time in one line other side also the same with a good condition road that is only we want. While making it 6 lines and development of the country ,state is absolutely right but it may pull out many families houses and residences. practically its not possible as there is high population density.
i say all these based on my experience in a developed country in europe. There high ways are like us but satellite controlled signals and good conditioned road nothing else. here saying all these tenders, contracts and half of this money goes to the pockets of middle people. there the government is having their own workers to do the public construction works. how like our government officials work

Very bad planning. Why should this road pass through mangalore?. Why cant they build a alternative road that starts far before BC road and connects Surathkal from behind. This would be definetly cheaper and will develop new areas and also be faster for motorists. This would reduce congestion, pollution and accidents which are bound to happen when a highway cuts across a city. If other places in karnataka can have bypass roads for highways , why do these NHAI insist on routing all the heavy oil/chemical tankers and dagerous cargo vehicles through Mangalore city roads.

One suggestion: Our roads seem to be too straight. Some more curves could be added for esthetic beauty. Then send the photos for Guinness Book. Many 'surangas' and 'pergude mate' like newly inaugurated padil underpass need to be multiplied. By the way, gurudwaras of churches, temples and mosques should not be touched. That's for our vote bank. That's called progress in Indian style. Our MP has said, Tall Gates would be removed once the time line is over. What an intelligent statement we clapped for.
