Chamarajanagar: Driver turns saviour for 68 people - stops bus at edge of deep gorge

Daijiworld Media Network - Chamarajanagar (SP)

Chamarajanagar, Oct 9: Due to the exemplary presence of mind shown by a driver, a bus of Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), driven by him downhill the steep winding road from atop Himavad Gopalaswamy Hill came to a grinding halt at the edge of the deep gorge. If the bus had moved a little ahead, all the 68 passengers aboard along with driver and conductor would have lost their lives.

The fact that the driver stood his ground without losing his courage and determination, skills he used to control the bus, and courage and conviction with which he faced the situation, saved the people from definite death. In normal course, drivers facing such situations turn panicky and jump down the vehicles to save themselves. For this, the driver of the bus, Chinnaswamy, came in for lavish praise from the passengers and officials of KSRTC.

The bus which had arrived at Gundlupet from Bengaluru at 11 am, had left for Gopalaswamy Hill. It was on its way back to Gundlupet with 68 passengers and negotiating a steep downhill road when the bus began to go out of control. Driver of the bus, Chinnaswamy, who showed exemplary presence of mind, succeeded in bringing the bus to a stop just before it was about to plunge 4,770 feet down. The passengers, who had turned panicky and were praying loudly, were surprised to find that the bus had come to a stop before jumping to its doom. The Hill was about to witness one of the worst tragedies in the area when the imminent was averted by the driver.

A KSRTC officer said that God intervened and saved the passengers. Gopalaswamy Hill is known for steep, winding roads and drivers in charge of vehicles need to be very alert and the vehicles need to be fit before they can ply on this road. Although recently the KSRTC Gundlupet unit had begun to run two mini buses on this route, two big buses which were earlier serving this route were continued as before.

I think, long distance, bus driving on our treacherous roads is more difficult than flying a passenger jetliner??
Drivers feat is no less than the recent AI pilot's skilful handling of a passenger aircraft n landing it safely!!

He drove recklessly, carelessly or in a hurry, under the influence alcohol etc. But he never failed in his confidence and courage or panicked. Mostly drivers who maneuver such steep curves & bends or U pins should be very courage’s. Once I with my fly family members (around 12 members) were returning Ooty by a coaster and he halted the vehicle at an edge of road to give way to the bus climbing, all of us thought that finished ! Had no courage even to peep down from the window. My Gosh, we exclaimed.
Ofcourse, young driver and he was driving too fast.

Every one is busy praising the driver. Did any one asked how did the driver lost control.
He cant give excuse of brake failure. Because now all busses have spring loaded pneumatic break system,
Driving recklessly must have caused the problem . we must remember Driver also saved his life by saving others life.

Also the brake master cylinder will have four separate valves, even if one line fails, the brakes or other three lines will work. It is highly unlikely that all four breaks down at a time. Break fail is almost impossible in new generation vehicles.

These KSRTC drivers drive too casually. If one has ever seen them driving in Charmadi ghats will know.
In one of the turns the bus front portion passed on my car bonnet, it was a narrow escape to me and my family.
These drivers drive without even braking at the sharp corners or don’t even honk to alert the oncoming vehicles.

This was clearly a drivers fault as bus didn’t develop any mechanical faults or brakes didn’t fail or jam due to overheating.
Stop praising the driver and enquire with the educated or smart passengers what exactly happened and how he has been driving in the ghats.

Absolutely very very poor comment..Bus was about to plunge 4,700 feet down..and he stopped it at the dead edge...Can you imagine one careless or rash driver can show this type of brave act ? Impossible..he will never ever do..This KSRTC driver did not think about his life..He wanted to save all 68 passengers first ..I salute him from the core of my heart...

Note: Today two news gave me shock..1. Manipal police book father of a child due to negligence driving 2..Indian,Mangalore comment

@Indian mangalore,it is easier to comment than to drive this curvy position ,.when one thinks that curvey road is not meant for such a big bus with so many passengers.might be enough for a van or cars but not buses.one who drives is know better.what when someone takes over or comes from opposite side with same type when there is no place?we should only at present certainly thank him for saving so many lives.may be the problem was something else as we think.Afterall noone drives to his own hell.even to jumpoff too was hardly any place.Let us be bit positive than to give negetive comments.

Enough to send shivers down (one's) spine.
Nothing but miraculous escape from the thresh hold of death. God is Great !
In such a situation it’s natural that passengers are bound to be panic and any out of control rush to come out would have made a bad impact.
The driver should be rewarded both by the passengers & KSRTC.

Why reward the driver. No mechanical fault, that means he was driving rashly. In Ghat sections one need to be very careful specially in turns like this. The incident must be investigated for putting the lives of 68 passenger in danger.

In the absence of mechanical fault, the reason for this accident would be negligent driving. Negotiating the ghat roads should be done in lower gears such as 2nd or 1st and not rely on braking alone as brakes heat up and lose braking power.

Great news. Many times after a long travel, while getting down, we fail to thank drivers. Though it is difficult to thank drivers in city buses, it is easy to thank them and make them feel good when we get down from bus after a long journey. Sometimes full night we sleep trusting God and trusting our driver. We need to thank divine driver and also vehicle driver while getting down. We can also start calling drivers as Captain!
