Udupi, Aug 31: MLA,Vinay Kumar Sorake, revealed that an action plan worth Rs 60 crore has been prepared for the construction of underground drainage in Kaup municipal limits. He also stated that another action plan worth Rs 70 crore has been drafted to provide clean drinking water from Manipur rivulat to Kaup municipal limits.

He was speaking at the general session of the municipal council held on Tuesday August 29.

"Grant of five crore rupees has been sanctioned for construction of pedestrian path from Kaup town, national highway 66 via Polipu and Hosa Marigudi and for widening of the beach road. We plan to have wider roads when laying new roads. Demand will be put forth for a special grant of ten crore to the municipality," he claimed.

Kiran Alva, member of the opposition, drew Sorake's attention to the fact that the health centre in the heart of the city does not have proper doctors or medicines and that the staff there are not getting their pay properly. Sorake said that Shirva, which is within Kaup constituency, has a community health centre. He said that Kaup should have got community health centre long back. "Now a building at an expenditure of one crore rupees is being built for the purpose. As this has been announced as a separae taluk, a 100-bed hospital will come up soon. Staff will be appointed on contract basis. Shortage of doctors is experienced everywhere. The government has set into motion the process of appointing medical officers," he stated.

Arun Shetty of the opposition questioned as to whether the municipality would be responsible to pay additional money to Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board because of the unscientific construction of effluents treatment plant here. He wanted the entire works to be checked by a team of experts. In reply, Sorake said that when he was urban development minister, he had evinced special interst and saw to it that grant of three crore rupees was sanctioned for the effluents treatment plant. "As this project encountered large scale opposition, it was delayed and project cost shot up. However, the additional fund of Rs 2.3 crore needed for the purpose will be met by Water Board," he assured.

Chief officer, Rayappa, said that the government has issued notification banning hanging of banners in Kaup town. He said that banners should be displayed only at the spot fixed for the purpose by the municipality. "We will provide 7,850 green and red buckets for the collection of dry and wet waste from houses and commercial establishments. Within two months, garbage accumulated near the graveyard here would be cleared," he said.

President of the municipality, Saumya, and vice president, K H Usman, were present.
