Mangaluru: 500 metres of smart road in smart city, soon to be a reality

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Aug 28: Under the smart city project, several roads within the vicinity of State Bank area will soon get transformed into smart roads at an expenditure of about Rs 300 crore. Out of them, the stretch of the road between A B Shetty Circle and the circle in front of mini Vidhan Soudha will be the first to go through this change.

On August 26, approval was given for the project aimed at turning this 500-metre-stretch of the road into smart road. The decision was taken at the second meeting of special purpose vehicle formed to execute smart city plan held at the city corporation office on Saturday. Project management consultant will prepare detailed project report relating to this sanction within a month. Tender process for the project has to be completed within 30 days. After this road is developed, other roads at the hub of the city are planned to be developed in phases, and towards this end, the city has been divided into divisions for planned development.

As per plan, 100 acres of area of which Nehru Maidan is an important part, Hampankatta area encompassing 27 acres, Bunder, fisheries area and Bunder, apart from roads surrounding temples and religious centres will undergo a change of face. Hospitals, IT development, small industrires, health care centres, tiles factory, Wenlock and Lady Goschen Hospitals etc will also form part of the plan earmarked for development of smart roads. Roads leading to river banks and seashore will also be taken up for development.

In addition, the next step is to facilitate people to get their work done on the spot without having to move around city corporation, police department, regional transport office, governmetn departments etc. For this purpose, 'Onetouch Mangaluru' app will be developed which the concerned hope, will function in all the 60 wards of the city. Preparation of detailed project report for this project has also been permitted, and the city corporation hopes that people will get timely messages from departments about load shedding, collection of garbage that day, etc. The mobile app will provide services like city guide, emergency service, buiding licence and information about other facilities, parking lots, passport verification, driving licence details, information about roads, water supply, ration cards etc.

City mayor, Kavita Sanil, said that the project is being implemented with the participation of central, state governments as well as the city corporation here. She said that at the second meeting of special purpose vehicle, first phase of project was given the go ahead.

In my understanding 'Smart city' the priorities should be given on sanitation, free and better healthcare, uninterrupted potable drinking water and the least pure oxygen to breath.
Infrastructure is just an additional convenience. But basic necessities are need of the Human rights.

I think government need to re approach this proposal and disperse the budget for the first priorities.

What was the need to concrete the Mother Theresa road at Falnir? it was a utter waste. The planned concreting is not done why has the corporation done a partial job. The work done I mean the concrete work done now we see vehicles parked and no movement of any vehicles, no dividers on the road. In fact the widening of the road should have done with a plan and a vision, but this type of work there is no vision. In fact instead of concreting the road for vehicles should have built a footpath, which is the need of the hour on Mother Theresa. Looks like just fooling the people of Mangalore. At this rate can Mangalore become a smart city.

Its a step in the right direction. Mangalore can be easily transformed into a smart city especially coz it has the highest capita of Smart People. Having said that, any development of the core area as targetted in the first phase should take into consideration a long term solution, not a 5 year plan to be delivered in 15 year term ( if we are lucky) but a 25 years plan delivered in 2.5 years.
The corporation is capable of doing it and has enough resources to do so in addition to the private giant builders who can help the city by playing by the rules and not encroching on public property. Every property based on its size should be forced to build a certain amount of public utility, like safe barricaded footpaths, safe smart pedestrian crossings, safe power efficient (solar) footpath lighting, enough waste collection bins etc. etc.
"If there is will, there is a way!"
    First things first,
    1. convert the AB shetty circle to a smart traffic control junction as it is an easy 4 way junction.
    2. Reactivate Jyoti signal
    3. Move the city bus stand out please.
    4. Mark a 3km radius around hampankatta junction to be free of heavy vehicles during daytime. (To kottara in the north 5km, pumpwell in the east 3 km, jeppinamogaru in the south 4 km)
    5. Have only city round service between 6am to 6pm
    6. All express bus services to be outside of the city
    7. Cleaning of streets and garbage collection is of utmost priority if we want to start looking at a smart city, a healthy city.

Most of the above is achievable within 6 months time frame, but again needs a strong will to take on different mafias

I long to see mangalore as a smart city, i want to see that transformation take place

    All the best!.

Smart city mean only wasting the money in the name of smart city. First of all control the traffic system then shift the service bus stand, whole sale vegetable market , RTO office and DC office. To out side the city. Automatically city will become smart with out spending more money.

Development of Smart city of mangalore. Our Corporation officials and Corporators are wasting tax payers money at the Suvarna road kankanady , by diverting the storm drain system twice to favour just a single Apartment bldg people who have encroached the Govt land and made as their private parking lot. Storm water drain if done straight and joined to the already existing one the cost would have been half of the present cost. If the storm water drain is so narrow and twisted so many times how the water will flow smoothly during heavy rains. What is the need to do it zig zag. and what cost and when there is plenty of Govt land to do it straight. Is this we call development of smart city as per whimsies of Corporation officials and corporators and going at any length to favour one person and ignoring the pleas of hundreds of users of the road. I think Congress and BJP people are in sleeping mode. They are no more interested in serving the people of this area and votes of the people in this area.
It has been more than five years now after concretising the road without any proper planning by the smart officials and engineers of Mangalore city Corporation still no proper pedestrain crossing in the heart of the city. May be they are thinking all are going by vehicles and by flight and nobody is going by walking like them.
Look at the fate of our Flyover at pumpwell. More than 3 years now which should have been completed in six months. Our MP, MLA, MLC and our Polititians are just talking about development and fooling the people. Such a small Flyover they could not complete in 6 motnhs and they are ready to put people at inconvenience as long as possible.

We cannot eat the cake and have it too.’
City/ Corporation limit is expanding likewise the population Mangalore. Residential buildings and shopping/commercial malls are mushrooming at every corner and in the meantime trees and greenery is dwindling as the passing of time.
Best way to maintain ecological balance is to plant new seedlings to cover for the loss of lost greenery.
Mangalore during 60's - 80's was full of Coconut and other trees and now we can see more, sky scrapers or tall building all around. Rapid developments.

The trees along Velencia, Kankanady, Nadigudda roads were cut down for road development with a promise to plant trees once the development is completed, which is still not done. MCC or dept. of parks are not even interested in this development. We should setup an Citizens corner to highlight the issues faced by people through false promises made by respective govt. bodies.
