Mangaluru: Airport runway expansion plan found to be unviable, shelved for now

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Aug 21: The extension of the runway at the airport here, which the people of the coast were eagerly awaiting, is being assigned to back burner for the present, it is gathered. As per information, chief secretary of the state, Subhash Chandra Khuntia, has been conveyed this information by Airports Authority of India. The authority has put off the project for now, as it that it is not viable for the present.

Airports Authority of India, it is gathered, is dithering in the matter of extending the runway because of cost involved and practical difficulties faced in extending the runway because of uneven terrain and this being a table top airpot. It therefore plans to undertake measures to make optimum utilization of currently available infrastructure by increasing operations of aircrafts which can be operated from here.

There had been demand for longer runway to enable bigger aircrafts to land here. The current length of the runway here is 2,450 metres that is enough for aircrafts like Airbus 320 and 321 to land. But aircrafts with wider bodies like Boeing 777 and 747 are currently unable to fly to the airport here because they need longer runways. L&T, an infrastructure major, which was asked to prepare a report on the expansion of the runway, had submitted proposals to increase the length of the runway to 3,450 metres.

AAI chairman, Guruprasad Mohapatra, said in the letter that the current infrastructure at the airport along with proposed expansion of terminal building can serve 5.5 million passengers per annum and that as against the current capacity of 2 million passengers per year, the renewed upper limit is expected to be reached only by 2030.

The government however will go ahead with acquisition of additional 34 acres of land to cover runway end safety area at the instance of the directorate general of civil aviation, the chief secretary clarified.

Speaking to daijiworld, Mangaluru airport director V V Rao said the project is not viable. "The current Mangaluru airport is sufficient to handle 5 million passengers a year. As of now, we are handling 2 million passegers a year. The expansion of the runway spending Rs 12,000 crore is not required as of now. It depends on how many Dreamliners show their interest in this airport. There is no meaning to spending more than Rs 10,000 crore only for one or two Dreamliners. The current runway is catering to Airbus 320, 321 and Boeing 737. These Airbuses are not facing any problems. In future if more Dreamsliners show interest, we can think about the expansion."

As we all aware that, we had only 02 International Airports in Karnataka. But still the authorities were negotiating/neglecting the expansion of infrastructure . Dreamliner's will show interest once the infrastructure will convince them to Land the flight safely with smooth handling. Even handling of baggage's also very poor. Even its not an busy Airport, we need to wait long time to get our baggage's, Also SOME custom officers were waiting the passengers like hungry animal. Even the roads connecting to Airport are very poor & narrow. Also there is no room for expand the roads to put more lanes. Specially there no reflecting sign boards in the arrival/departure roads at the time of maintenance. Even we don't know, why we have pay for parking our vehicles, because airports were build by tax money itself. Rather than investing money for new airport, please try to upgrade the basic standard of International Airport.

    AIrport Director Mr. Rao ,
    Let me highlght somethings.
--Now forget about your dream liner aircraft dont go to think high.
If A 320 & 321 are landing then why is jet Spice,AI express still using that old model 737 aircraft for international sectors.when most of the airlines are using 320. Even Indigo for domestic is using 320.
The seats of this Jet ,Spice,AI express those are cheap rezon sets. Agree with Spice & AI express they are budget airlines but still Fly Dubai,Air Arabia even if it is budget airline see their service. see the cabin seats cushion once comforatble to sit WHen jet is charging so much That to partner with Etihad airlines they are not keeping their internationl standards.
Next; You are saying you ( mangalore airport)are handling million passengers do you have a proper conver belt ??? for international you one conver belt & when two flights land people have to wait for hours for their luggage...You can't do a simple arramngements for handling luggage's
AT depature one security check point see the line people have to wait for international & domestic to finish their security checks. Next The security personal they don't know to respect people.
--- See the road going towards airport they are worst then any village roads .The newly constructed road near to airport see the state of that road not even 1 1/2 year,
    slove all these problems
    Please don't give reasons
By the grace of God our pilots are doing their job & landing the flights safely .
Alredy our bell has rung with one incident .Please don't give chance fora nother one.
Unfortunate we have Ministers from central in both parties who are good for nothing ,Just fit to protest ,Hunger strike& blame ....

I was about to suggest that!!! Thats a brilliant idea. Use a flat land this time instead of the table top!! What were they thinking when they planned it. I guess they did not think about the future at all... "Av Aanaga tooka" mentality..

There should be a high speed connecting underground train between Mangalore and Udupi with a stop over at the midway airport. And plans should also be drawn up for having an underground metro in Mangalore and Udupi. If started now, it might take a couple of decades to see some development. London built the underground metro 100 years ago crisscrossing under rivers! and we still dont have that technology!!

    Dear sir,
Building a Dream-liner or constructing an airport or runway is not a days job. It takes many years. Now we know that the future would be about more people flying especially on budget airlines. When the airport was initially built, no one had a slight idea about budge airlines. Without planning they kept on expanding and now it has come to a point that expansion is not viable. My question is that whether people's safety not important? Since one accident already happened and now we almost know the reason for that accident even though the pilot was blamed for that, we cannot just think about viability. Mangalore-Udupi is developing like anything and without planning for future expansion of the airport, how can be just wait and count how many dream-liner's would show interest. If the airport/runway is built or expanded for Dream-liner then it can make other airliners safer too.

Agreed with some of the views about allowing expansion of current airport was short-sighted. All is not wasted. They can give the current airport to defense. IAF, Coast Guard and Navy can make use of the airport and they need more similar infrastructure for their growing needs and I am sure they will be happy to make the current airport a base. Local leaders can lobby for a new airport near Niddodi with good road connectivity from all the three directions (Mangalore/Kerala, Puttur side, Karkala/Moodabidri side and Udupi/Manipal/Kundapur side). There was a proposal to build a power plant at Niddodi and I think, about 1000 acres of land is available which should be sufficient to build a 10,000 feet + runway including a secondary runway for the international airport. They should be able to complete this project including road connectivity costs for much less than Rs. 12,000 crores (probably less than 50% of this cost).

Mangalore/Udupi corridor is a fast growing area and so, the local leadership should think about the needs 25 years and beyond and not based on the current needs.

Our so called big state Karnataka can't even develop 2nd major airport of the state...small state like Kerala already has 4 international airport... For sure kochi is gonna overtake rival Mangalore.. As Mangalore is branded city better to build another airport near mulki-surathkal than udupi side.

I strongly feel that Mangalore is going to loose out to Kannur airport which will be opened end of this year . In business terms it will be an asset. Kannur airport all major airlines have shown their willingness to operate from Kannur people will stop coming to Mangalore as Kannur will have better facility and connectivity , the distance from Mangalore is 150 kms . As more airlines will be flying to Kannur flights will be cheaper and faster in terms of waiting to change flights . I feel that Mangalore has got no choice but to expand it will be a boost to the city as well as to the state economically . All locals are leaving and going to other places to find jobs as we have got very good educational , medical and banking facilities we should put good use these advantages and retain locals in Mangalore.

if its not possible In Bajpe Airport, Many place ( exm : Udpi, Bayndoor, Manipal) have to develop our coastal belt, & people want 380 airbus in our area. when will start 380 flight that time we will sure our runway is safe for us.

According to statement given by Mangalore Airport Director V V Rao to Daijiworld, the expansion of Mangalore International Airport runway is not viable at this juncture considering the cost involved in the said project is very high. This is the discouraging and negative signal given by the director to the people of coastal region. Instead of giving such negative statement, he could have thought of going for alternative option with the same budget may be sometimes less.
According to my opinion Padubidri (Abbedi-Kanchinadka belt) is ideal place as was decided earlier. But because of political issue, the idea was dropped to set up an international airport at Padubidri and slicked to Bajpe table top airport.
Why we prefer Padubidri is because it has got a wide and vast plain area, wherein not much expenditure (money) is involved for leveling and making run way and other infrastructure and no terrain as well. Half the money could have been saved as compared to Mangalore Bajpe airport, had it been in Padubidri.Besides it is more convenient and accessible to the people of both Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district people to reach their respective destination without any hitches. Still authorities can apply their mind for alternative option such as Padubidri..

Our concern is not that the bigger jets cannot land in mangalore, We are worried that the runway is short and being a table top runway, there is a major question mark on safety. I would careless whether a dreamliner can land there or no.

Like all things in india, the govt is playing with peoples lives. Note that i am not blaming one single govt but all of them. I get that the old airport was built long time back during the time when the aircrafts were smaller. But why was new airport built at the same place???? which idiots sanctioned it??? was bribery involved?????

We cant even build our roads right ..... how can we expect our airports to be built right?

The current mangalore airport does not have any scope for expansion. its better start building a new one at a safe place.

Another thing is that Airbus 320, 321 and Boeing 737 more or less are the same size jets. why would they have any problems operating from that runway.

Bangalore has made really good choice of moving from HAL to new BIAL airport.
    Similarly Mangalore should go forward...
    Never compromise on safety...
Mangalore will become metropolitan city in future say 100 years from now..

I was reading history of Mangalore... Once upon a time India's longest running train was starting at central station during 1929....

If the airport has facilities obviously not one or two .. 10 to 20 Dreamliners will show interest to operate from ixe ... Airlines like Emirates , Qatar airways etc all are always ready to operate to Ixe jus because of the runway it's not possible for them to do so
Instead of the state govt spending 13000 crore for Yettinahole project which is not useful for none . The state govt can atleast thinking of investing the same money on extending the runway and the infrastructure of the current terminal which is atleast useful for the people

Let the airport be in Bajpe.
For any longer destinations, we can always fly to Dubai with small budget airlines, spend some time there ( hassle free transit visa) and fly to different destinations from there by Emirates A380s!
Or take a flight to Mumbai or bangalore and fly from there. Why shifting to Padubidri?

By spending Rs. 12000 crore just to increase the length of the current runway by 1000 meters is a foolish proposal. In Rs. 12000 crore investments, I am sure we can build a swanky international airport anywhere in between Kaup & new Mangalore sea port adjourning national highway 66 like Kochin airport. Once done, the current airport can be converted into Airforce hub. Only wested interest can think otherway round!
