Mangaluru: Five years from now, zoom to Bengaluru on eight-lane highway

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Aug 8: Under the ambitious Bharatmala project of the department of road transport and highways which will replace the existing highway projects, national highway 75 between the city and Bengaluru has been included. As per this futuristic plan of the central government, the road from here to the capital city of Karnataka will be turned into high speed, eight lane road. Estimated investments for this transformation happens to be Rs 1.2 lac crore. This project will be implemented either by National Highways Authority of India or Central Road Research Institute.

Detailed project report and preliminary surveys connected with this proposed work are under way. The work on upgrading this road will be taken up within three to four months, as per reports.

Roads being built under Bharatmala scheme are meant for fast movement of vehicles. Therefore these roads cannot have potholes, humps, etc. The ghat section of the road where potholes during rainy season have become the order of the day, will be built by using rubberized tar, it is gathered. The department's experience is that rubber roads built in steep terrain by following cold mix technology have endured harsh climatic conditions and movement of vehicles better for a longer period. Therefore, the department has been building rubberized roads with cold mix technology in places where rainfall has been abundant.

As vehicles are expected to zoom at around 120 km per hour on these roads, the roads have to be bereft of steep bends, ups and downs. Separate lanes will be earmarked for the movement of buses, ambulances, cars and goods vehicles. Therefore, the current time needed to reach Bengaluru from here will come down to four to five hours, it is learnt. The proposed road , which will take five years to complete, will be on the current route of the highway, but will have only two tollgates at the beginning and the end, as per the plan now.

    All this is welcome.
But when will the law enforcing authorities teach the people how to use motorways??
Heavy vehicles should have speed limit of 80 kms.
Heavy vehicles should be penalised for using high speed lane (fast lane)
Two wheelers, autos, bullock carts, hand carts and pedestrians are not allowed in motorways.
Overtaking is from right lane only. Out of 4 lanes, 3 lanes are for traffic and fourth one is overtaking.
Immediately after overtaking, the vehicle should come back to next slower lane.
Stopping on motorways is not to be allowed. Only emergency lane has to be used for such stopping.
There is sense in paying toll charges only if the motorways are guarded from local people crossing, animals crossing, carts etc. causing nuisance.
People who have the experience in Europe or even in middle East, come back to India and follow the rotten traffic sense over here.

First repair and maintain existing roads and highways in coastal districts. This is another plot by central government to cut trees from western ghats in name of expansion of highways . Yesterday state government wanted another project across coastal rivers in the name of supplying water to Bengaluru. They are not increasing frequency of trains from Mangalooru to Bengaluru and also not reducing time taken to reach. Time has come when lush green forests of western ghats in Karnataka will disappear which will further aggravate water shortage through out Karnataka.

Let's wait and see as to when and how this dream of the eight-lane highway will start and finish. It says five years from now. When is now? I have seen recently that many roads are not completed from Udupi to Mangaluru. Driving on these roads is treacherous. Most of the roads are half completed for reasons known only to the government and the contractors. In the US when a road project is taken up by the contractor, he has to finish the work before the stipulated time. If the work is completed before the time, they get a bonus. Also, they use the latest machinery.

Take the State HIGHWAY back to the old route via PADIL - NAGURI - PUMP-WELL, this takes the pressure off the Road via Bikernakatt; subsequently less pressure on NANTOOR JUNCTION
Can not imagine a highway running through city limit and choking the city roads immensely. Some stupid plan was applied and caused the problems for people living all along Nantoor to Padil junction. NANTOOR will always remain the way it has been; a few more ministers will visit, make suggestion and the matter will be put to back burner.

Mr.Gadkari in his last visit had categorically stated that there will be three upgraded roads that could effectively bypass mangalore. These should have been implemented first.
If we continue to allow all the highway inside mangalore then parts of mangalore will cease to exist. People from surathkal to thokuttu and beyond are harrowing time due the the highway passing through these areas. Areas inside mangalore especially kulur to nanthoor , bikarnakatte to vamanjoor/padil etc. and nanthoor to thokuttu have no hopes of any foothpaths and road access because of this haphazard planning of highways even though they come under the corporation, pay taxes etc..
The highway should bypass mangalore and this the only solution. Peoples safety and not high speed death traps should be priority.

Nice to note the development of a National Highway between Mangalore and Bangalore (NH 75). However here are some suggestions for implementation:
    1. Perform a Feasibility study with Options and a cost estimation of ± 25% for budgetary purposes and Project schedule.
    a) Plan the required intersections during the Feasibility Study phase of NH 75.
    b) Include tunneling of “Shiradi Ghat” section in the scope of Feasibility Study.
    c) Include in the scope also the weather conditions (Ambient temperature (min/max), Rainfall (min/max), Relative Humidity (min/max) etc) in the scope to develop the Basis of Design during Feasibility phase.
    d) Let the life of the project be for a period of 50 years.
    e) Employ the best Japanese or Korean Technologies.
    2. Typically a Project of this nature will take approximately 60 months (5 years) including Feasibility Study phase, after Final Investment Decision (FID) is made by the government agencies.

Before building the road, awareness is required how to change lanes. Driving from Udupi to Mangalore is a pain. Both lanes are occupied by vehicles so which lane is for faster vehicles you will not know. people join from the side road as if it is their right. When you try to adjust yourself and try to overtake then accidents happen.

Ex-PM Mr. Vajapayi's dream 4 track between multi cities, after his rule UPA1 & UPA2's 10 years corrupt rule caused so much delay and could not complete especially Highway No.75, instance in front of our eyes i.e. padil-kannur road situation.

This is new project alternating current highway upgrading from 4 lane to 8 lane, good initiative, if Modi's second innings not continuing then this project also will be ruined like earlier.
