Bengaluru: Widening of highway between Hassan, BC Road set to begin


Bengaluru, Apr 4 (DHNS): With the clearing of roadside trees nearly coming to a close, the stage is set for the commencement of civil work on widening a portion of National Highway 75 connecting Hassan and Bantwal Cross (BC) Road.

However, the stretch passing through Shiradi Ghat is not included in the project as the government is planning to construct a tunnel in this section.

A detailed project report is being prepared for the proposed tunnel project. The widening of the highway between Nelamangala and Hassan has been completed.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had invited tenders to remove 3,070 trees to make way for the four-lane highway between Hassan and Maranahalli, near Sakaleshpur. According to official sources, no less than 6,000 trees have been axed in the forest and on revenue and private lands. However, NHAI as well as the Forest department are guarded while sharing information regarding the number of trees that were felled.

The road work between Hassan and Maranahalli is being taken up by Isolux Corsan Company, while the stretch between Addahole and BC Road is awarded to L&T. It will take no less than two years to complete the work. The widening would add seven to eight metres to the existing road. The projected cost for upgrading the highway between Hassan and Maranahalli is said to be Rs 400 crore.

    Each tree has a timber value of 5 lakh . 6000 * 5 is around 300 crores should have been collected by govt from the proceeds . Please verify what is the amount collected from this timber.

    DFO /other officials in Hassan and Manglore district should submit this report . This 300 crores you can plant 1 million tress in western ghats . So damage is minimal if its done in the interest of public .

    Good new its very bad road, i hope it will lessen the duration of journey. Since L&T is involved the roads will be genuine. But toll will rise.

    Best solution to avoid tree cutting is Tunneling where ever possible. It will cut down the travelling time and our beautiful nature.

    Government should re-look into their policy of cutting the trees , rather I prefer shifting the trees at whatever cost it might take.... Since once we cut the tree we cant plant a tree.. Planting a plant today without nurturing it will be a waste and will not reap benefits

    Sir do not expect anything positive as the road touching buildings r said to be legal n to demolish them , to widen them, would be a near impossible task!!

    BC road junction, service bus stand r in pathetic state, reminds one of Malgudi days!

    Sr citizens n small children just cannot use this place, no footpaths, shops touching roads, ramshackle buildings, no designated bus stop, bus shelter/dedicated to govt buses; its just a total mess!!
    With the burgeoning population n vehicle movement, it is long time that plans r made to cater to another 25 years ahead, but who is bothered?

    This is a most pleasant and long awaited message. A four-lane highway between Hassan and B.C. Road will change the outlook of the entire scenic drive which we constantly utilize when we visit India twice a year. The smooth and safe roads is the best link not only between each place, but also between people who are obliged to travel from place to place on account of the family requirements or business committment. It is indeed a scenic drive, and deprival of a few thousand trees is not a favorable situation because we do not wish to lose a single tree. But in the ultimate bargain, a comfortable and spacious road between Hassan and Kangalore will benefit lakhs of people who have a reason and need to travel to palces and meet the people.

    The lost trees can always be created by planting new trees that will grow up much faster than we think. The broad roadway will ease the traffic and will also smoothen the journey back and forth. This will also attract new investors in the Coffee plantation and pepper plantation and will find the improved roads to the best convenience of everyone.

    All that we hope and pray is that the authorities will select the right road contractors who will perform a good job and also a durable job. Their future credibility as well as the reputation of the authorities depend upon the creation of good roads for the right price and right quality. More and more foreign tourists will prefer to take the road journey from Mangalore to Bangaloere and back once the better roads appear. Good roads will create more tourism and more attraction for all that Mangalore and Bangalore has in abundance, and so also all the scenic beauty that lies within.

    Sir do not keep too much hopes! Do u know most of the huge reserved forests in the western ghats have been ravaged by huge forest fires, to add to it the severe heat wave n drought, many wild animals perished n some going near human settlement, huge tracts of valuable species of trees turned to ashes! Don't wanna elaborate more and make u pessimistic! Cheers for ur positive thoughts!

    Sir, while infrastructure development is good, rapid deforestation in the name of development is really a bad idea. They have cut such huge trees on both side of the road for this project. It is not easy to recreate them as you say. First, the government do not show the same interest in planting the trees and protecting them. But when it comes to uprooting the trees they will finish it within weeks. To give you an example, you should see the existing highway between Bangalore and Hassan. They had cut trees during 4 laning work. No trees have been planted there as replacement so far!
    The scenic route you mention will not be there once you cut the trees! This reckless deforestation has resulted in less rains and depleted ground water level. If you visit Bangalore / Mangalore during summer, surely you will realise the water scarcity! We need faster roads so we cut the trees. But we don't realise that a day is not far away, when we cry for a drop of water!

    Without cutting of standing trees on both sides of the road it is impossible to widen the roads. during British regime narrow roads were formed which have to be widened now as developmental activities. So it is good project. While widening as far as possible straighten all the bend and curved roads. but whether this is a five year Plan or 10 or 25 years plan. Finish the work as early as possible without dragging it for years together.

    Our Govt. under the K.T.P (Karnataka Tree Preservation) Act bound to raise Plantations in Govt. lands/ other areas in ieu of the trees cut. And they are doing such Plantation works. Even Private land owners if they intend to cut trees from their patta land for construction purpose and extension of agriculture work have to plant trees. The problem is the Forest Dept and the Govt. is not giving details by publishing the details for the information of the general public which they should do even now to enlighten the public about it. Otherwise public like you think that Trees are only cut for development purpose and not planting sufficient number of saplings.
