Bhatkal, May 29: A 21-year-old girl died after she was pulled away by a giant wave during an unexpected high tide. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, May 29 at Gokarna beach.

The deceased has been identified as Pranitha Mehta (22). She was from Rajasthan. A group of 5 college friends, 4 girls and 1 boy from Jodhpur Law College in Rajasthan, had come to Gokarna after visiting Mumbai and Goa on Saturday. They had visited the beach on Sunday where the tragedy took place.

As per details of the case, the friends were at Gokarna beach, and were sitting on some rocks which were about 10-15 feet above sea, when due to unexpected high tide, 3 of the youngsters, including the deceased, were pulled away by a giant wave. Two of them were brought back to the shore by another wave, but the deceased, whose glasses had come off, continued to struggle as she held on to a rock for support. Unfortunately, she lost her grip, and was carried towards the deeper end of the sea by the waves.

The friends promptly called the police as well as the management of the hotel they were staying at, and proceeded to seek help from the local residents from a nearby village. By the time they did send some help, about forty minutes had already passed and the deceased was out of sight. She was brought back ashore on a boat by some of the local fishermen, and was pronounced dead by the authorities. Her body was taken for post-mortem and was handed over to her relatives afterwards.

It had earlier been reported that Pranitha died while trying to take a selfie, but it has now emerged that it was not the case.

A case has been registered in Gokarna police station limits.

she slipped from a boulder and did not fall from lighthouse clicking a selfie , had she fallen from lighthouse clicking a selfie her phone should have been damaged as well , which is intact with her parents , and neither do any reports mention same.
and also any one with reasonable mind and knowing the area would know it is impossible to slip from a light house directly into sea
plus you need permissions for same
just be a little sensitive towards the bereaved family

May the soul of Pranitha RIP. It was a tragic incident.

Tourists who come from interior areas do not know the sea well. They think its a gigantic tank or pond. hey do not understand the under currents of the sea / river. Infact the local villagers should advise such tourists when they find the sea rough esp. nearer to the monsoon or during the monsoon season.

On the other side the view from the light house at Bhathkal is breath taking. The light house is just 3.5 kms from the National Highway and opposite the fish warf ( bunder ). The view of the Karnataka coastline is out of this world. My advise to Mangalore / Udupi tourists who often drive to Goa, At Bhatkal town ( on the NH ) take a turn to the left which leads you directly to the fish warf. Opposite the warf there is a hill with the light house. You can drive up to the light house. You certainly won't leave that place for atleast an hour ! The countryside is absolutely scenic and beautiful.

Ohh yes, the scenery from the Bhathkal Light house is awesome and breath taking.

Another place is the " NIRVANA POINT " at Sashihitlu, Mukka. This is the place where the surfing competition was conducted. The Nirvana point too is absolutely beautiful and peaceful. If you suffer from acute stress just drive up to this pint and spend an hour or two. You will return with a peaceful mind. The road has recently been tarred upto the Nirvana point.

My deepest sympathies to Pranitha's family. May her soul RIP.

Another good place to visit is Kumta Fort. Don't miss visiting this place on your drive to Goa. In Karwar stay at Great outdoors, an island ( in the sea ) resort, about 20 minutes motor boat ride from the mainland. The island can be seen from the bridge. The resort is simple and homely with home cooked type food. The resort is situated at a height of at least 250 feet from the sea. Hence it is tsunami proof too ! There is an old fortress around it probably of the Vijayanagar times. The organisers arrange for the ride if you stay at the resort.
