Mangaluru, Nov 10: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal staged a strong protest against the celebration of Tipu Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan, at zilla panchayat office here on Tuesday November 10.

The protest was held outside the ZP office even as the district administration celebrated Tipu Jayanti in the Netravati hall of the ZP office.

Anticipating trouble, the police had already deployed tight security at the premises, putting up barricades and closing the gates to prevent protestors from interrupting the celebration.

The protestors led by VHP leader Jagadish Shenava, Bajrang Dal convenor Sharan Pumpwell and Franklin Monteiro of BJP Minority Morcha shouted slogans against the government and the district administration and waved black flags.

The police intervened and detained more than a 100 protestors and took them away.

District administration celebrates Tipu Jayanti

Amidst protests, Tipu Jayanti was celebrated by Dakshina Kannada district administration, zilla panchayat, minority welfare department, and the Kannada and culture department on November 10 at the zilla panchayat.

District incharge minister Ramanath Rai inaugurated the ceremony and unveiled the portrait of Tipu Sultan.

In his inaugural address Rai said, "It is important that people study Tipu in detail before labeling him as a 'fanatic'. Certain outfits have been indulging in propaganda against the Tiger of Mysore. He was one of the first freedom fighters of the country. Tipu was instrumental in Mysore’s victory against the British in all the four Mysore wars."

"Tipu Sultan is the son of the land. Paying a fitting tribute to him is our duty. We had chapters on Tipu in our school curriculum. However nobody revolted against it back then. Why now?" he questioned, adding that it was just the "mischief mongers who wanted to disrupt peace in the society and creating a ruckus against Tipu Jayanti".

The main speaker of the programme, historian Dr Uday Barkur said that Tipu was one of the key persons responsible for the revolution of South Karnataka. He slammed forums calling him a fanatic and urged people to learn facts from authentic sources before drawing a conclusion on Tipu’s character.

Stating that Tipu was responsible for the development of agriculture and sericulture in Karnataka, Dr Barkoor said it was due to Tipu’s farsightedness that Karnataka had turned into a developed state. "India would have been a pioneer in technology had there been only ten dynamic personalities like Tipu Sultan," he added.

Addressing the gatheirng MLC Ivan D'Souza said, "Those who are maligning freedom fighter Tipu Sultan are interested in their selfish motives rather than the betterment of society."

Mangaluru north MLA Mohiuddin Bava speaking about his childhood days said, "Previously Tipu Sultan's lessons were taught in schools and there was nobody to spread hatred about him. But now people are trying to frame him as an anti-Hindu leader. He was a freedom fighter who fought against the British."

Mangaluru south MLA J R Lobo, ZP CEO Srividya, deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim, police superintendent Dr S D Sharanappa, Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy president Mohammed Haneef, MUDA president Kodijal Ibrahim, Dr Kripa Amar Alva, Usman A and others were also present at the occasion.

Tipu posters torn, smeared with ink

Meanwhile, unidentified persons damaged posters and banners of Tipu Sultan put up by SDPI at Mahaveer circle, Pumpwell here.

The attackers also smeared ink on the posters and garlanded them with footwear.

On receiving information, the police removed the posters and banners to prevent further trouble.

If British rulers were so charitable, where was the need for freedom struggle.

British rule was marked by poverty, famine and epidemic and people were left to die.

Whatever British India did was to facilitate their business in India and carry the wealth to Britain.

    Dear readers, Tippu
Sultan(Mongol) and Other Mongol rulers fought with Britishers with selfish interests. But, Britishers drove these butchers away and created united One India which was handed over to Mahatma Gandhi on golden platter (only with peaceful demos) which would not been possible with these ruthless mongol kings. And Britishers gave us good educational values, railways, roads hospitals etc, etc. so, pls be be thankful of Britishers who came to our rescue to create united India. And don not bite the hand that fed you.
    Thanks

From the readers comment I understand that some of the people who oppose Tippu Jayanthi understand the basic tenants of Islam. In Islam celebrating someones birthday , installing statue of some personality or graphical depiction of the great personality is not right thing to do. Islam prohibits all that thing but the same philosophy at times misunderstood by many that Islam is intolerant but fact of the matter is that the basic premise of Islam is shunning image or cult or personality centric activities. Though I oppose celebration of Tippus birthday in principle I don't consider him as a bigot. from the history books I understand that he is a benevolent ruler who fought against his enemy number one British. People must understand that at that time democratic form of govt was not existed so as a King he has to protect himself from his enemies. Anyone who supported his enemies that is British he has taken stern action against them irrespective of their religion. He has granted aid to several Hindu temples and mutts. Wherever he built Fort there is temple inside it. He never destroyed it. This shows that he is tolerant ruler

    Dear All,

Islam opposes birthday of anybody including our prophet Mohammed, so this is just a politically motivated which we must not encourage.

Instead we can have a day for 'Poor and Beggars Dinacharane' where all the public meet and donate whatever they could help for the needy, it would be a great day and atmosphere, rather than fighting and loss to society. Even Almighty will bless our state 'Karnataka'

May God's mercy and blessings be upon all of us...

The Karnataka government had no business in celebrating the birth of a feudal chieftain called Tipu Sultan. He was not a patriot nor a freedom fighter. He fought against the British to save his own empire, nothing more than that. His atrocities against Hindus and Christians have been well documented. If he had contributed anything towards literature, as Mr. Girish Karnad would like us to believe, then his 'CONTRIBUTION' should have been acknowledged during one of the Sahithya Sammelans.. The government of Karnataka has plunged itself into the hot soup cauldron..

During freedom struggle Congress was not merely a political party, but a movement.

Shri Hedgewar, founder of RSS, was a freedom fighter under Congress.

He left Congress due to its minority appeasement and started RSS.

RSS opposed partition and you can see RSS volunteers in the Attinborough's movie "Gandhi" shouting slogans against partition.

    Dear readers,
Tipu Sultan, the greatest freedom fighter of India,
We should recall the contributions of the Tiger of Mysore during the freedom struggle. “Tipu sacrificed his life fighting against the British. His dedication and sacrifice should be an inspiration to the youth,”
Tipu was among the first to take up arms against the British. He even sacrificed his two children for the cause of the country.
According to historians, Tipu was the only king in the history of world who died on the battlefield fighting the enemies of the country.
We should respect his contribution to the county. He is great patriarch. Government would celebrated such jayanthi long years ago, but better late than never. Current government did justice to great king.
See the irony, some vested interest want to celebrate killer of father of nation Godse and disrupt the celebration of great King’s Jayanti. Government should not pay heed to such hypocrite and go ahead with the celebration. I think central govt should think to make Tippu’s Birth anniversary a national celebration and announce government holiday. Hope such good news will come soon.

The struggle for freedom started in the second half of the 19th century and intensified in the 20th century. The kings and rulers during Tipu's period, either fought among themselves or aligned with the British or French, for their own survival.

Both organisation praise India's first Terrorist Nathuram Godse and hate Father of nation. Obviously they hate real patriot and real Nationalists.
