New York, Sep 12: India’s Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi and Ukraine’s Antonina Sushkova bowed out of the US Open girls’ doubles after losing their semifinal to American sisters Kristina Penickova and Annika Penickova at Court 12 on Saturday.

The Indo-Ukrainian duo, who had stunned fourth-seeded Russian pair Felitsata Dorofeeva-Rybas and Anna Pushkareva in the quarterfinals, went down 6-7 (3), 2-6 in a one-hour-and-six-minute contest.

Revathi and Sushkova were competitive throughout a closely fought opening set. They broke the American pair twice despite winning 60 per cent of points on their first serve, compared with 74 per cent by the Penickova sisters.

The Indo-Ukrainian pair, however, had the edge on second serve, winning 48 per cent of points against 31 per cent by their opponents. They also committed fewer unforced errors in a tight first set.

The opening set went into a tie-break, where the Penickova sisters held their nerve to take the lead.

The Americans raised their level in the second set, while Revathi and Sushkova struggled to maintain their momentum and were broken twice.

The Penickova sisters won an impressive 85 per cent of their first-serve points and 63 per cent on second serve. Revathi and Sushkova managed 67 per cent and 40 per cent respectively.

Earlier in the tournament, Revathi and Sushkova had defeated fifth-seeded Czech pair Katerina Zajickova and Jana Kovackova in the round of 16 before overcoming Dorofeeva-Rybas and Pushkareva in the quarterfinals.

Revathi also competed in the junior singles at the US Open, where she was seeded 15th. She defeated American Emery Combs in the first round before losing to Arina Malygina in the round-of-32.

The Indian youngster had also reached the Wimbledon junior doubles quarterfinals alongside American Thea Frodin.
