Mangalore: Caught on camera - Mass copying in KSOU exams

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (NM)

Mangalore, Feb 1:
When lacs of students spend sleepless nights to score good marks in the exams, at least 50 students who appeared for post graduate exams under Karnataka State Open University (KSOU), Mysore at SM Institute of Higher Education, Milagres centre wrote their exam with subject books wide open next to them.

This was the scene when the media entered the premises for a reality check on Saturday, February 1, based on a tip-off. For nearly 50 students, it was certainly not an ‘exam’ but simply an exercise in mass copying.

The post graduate exams of KSOU were held in collaboration with Bharath Post-Graduate College, Chennai. The exams which started on Thursday January 30 are scheduled to go on till February 3.

On Saturday, students were seen writing exams with books next to their seats. As many as 53 students who appeared for the exams were spread out in four classrooms, with only one invigilator.

Although the vigilator initially dismissed allegations of ‘mass copying’ taking place at the examination centre, he pointed out that he has to invigilate four classrooms and cannot keep an eye on everyone.

The exams were being held for post graduate courses like masters in computer aplication (MSc), masters in business administration (MBA), masters in science (MSc) and masters in technology.

Among the 53 who appeared for the exams, some were elderly. They wanted a post graduate degree for the purpose of promotion, one of them said. However, it is suspected that with a payment of some extra money, ‘mass copying’ was allowed during the exams.

The official website of Bharath Postgraduate College, Chennai claims that it is an educational institution that was established in the new millennium year of 2000 to render high quality education. Bharath Postgraduate College is the largest conglomerate of reputed universities in Southern India for distance education. This college serves as a high tech study centre for Indian Universities in the areas of higher education to provide quality services to the student community, says the website.

However, the question to be asked is who is the culprit here - the institution, the invigilator or the system itself?

Such incidents demoralize and demotivate hard working and sincere students. Sincere students may adopt the same path what these copiers do, coz if s/he doesn’t copy, copier gets the good marks (if copied correctly). Sometimes due to fear, sincere student don’t dare these people. Really pathetic. Education system need to be changed. Difficult to judge one year efforts by three hour paper.

Mangalore has name for quality education. This is education hub and people from different parts of India and the world come to Mangalore for studies.
This news has come as a slap on the face for the history of quality of exams conducted here.
I agree the students should be punished, but this institute should not go free. Such institute should be banned which does not realise the impact of such a situation on the entire Mangalore and the entire student community.
    Embarrassment for Mangalore

Bro nobody is immune, or sacrosanct in the world, even in your most advanced countries money can buy anything!!

I have been doing extensive transcription work in all medical/medicolegal related fields wherein we listen to the doctor's voice dictation and put it down on paper, you will be shocked that so many docs from the richest of gulf countries who struggle to speak a single sentence of English would be having multiple specialist degrees from advanced institutes of the most advanced countries!! I wonder if they cannot speak English even after acquiring such big degrees behind their names in what language would they have assimilated all the knowledge???

I am instantly reminded of a song from the movie Kala Bazaar (Khader Khan) the lyrics of which are: "Tanh Tanh Ki Suno Jhankaar
    Yeh Duniya Hai Kala Bazaar
Yeh Paisa Bolta Hai Yeh Paisa Bolta Hai
    Main Ghol Hoon Duniya Ghol
Jo Bholu Toh Khol Du Sabki Phol
    Yeh Paisa Bolta Hai

Dhan Gora Ho Ya Kala Ho
Jag Uska Jo Paise Wala Ho
    Haklese Miley Yah Rishwat Se
    Banta Hai Muqadar Daulat Se
    Sacha Hai Yaha Kangaal
    Toh Beimaan Hai Maalamal
    Yeh Paisa Bolta Hai..........

    Jai Ho Malamaal!!!

Shocking and appalling that this happened in the heart of one of the main cities of Karnataka!! Imagine what would be happening in semi rural to rural areas of this and the other district!! Literally selling degrees that too in computer applications and technology, gosh!!!!

No doubt any amount of degrees can be bought with money power, but not true knowledge and wisdom and no doubt so called "quack doctors" are flourishing more than degree holders!!! Jai ho!!

We call only a particular section of the society as corrupt! is it true. They are not one among us? But truth is different, we are all corrupt and its there in our minds. We believe in short cuts! Unless our mindset changes, corruption will not be removed from our great nation.

Indian education is tough. Other universities like few in U.S or in Europe and a few in Asia as well prepare the students. Give them like 15 important questions to focus on from which any 6 or 7 may come. Not like in India. Pressurize the students soo much . They literally have to study the whole book. And sometimes the questions that come are not even relevant . Its easy to criticize and say shame and stuff. I totally agree cheating is not good. But don't pressurize the students in the bargain they commit suicide n r forced to cheat ot do other stuff.Infian lectures some of them are not cooperative too.are egoistic. Think about it. Our education needs to be taken a look at.

All this time, I was thinking Karnataka had some system and process in place But traditional way of answering or writing test to be changed to system based one.
I would say objective type system based exam including case studies.

Result is instant and productive one.

Looks it might take another few decades to implement with this kind of attitude This undermines value of education degrees internationally as they are not being recognised either in the middle east or elsewhere.

    Hopping accused are punished accordingly.

This is a real disgrace. Mangalore is considered to be the seat of education and I must say that it is the responsibility of the invigilators to see that the exams are conducted fairly. Government is kind enough to conduct KSOU exams for those who seriously need additional educational qualifications for their promotions, etc. Children be serious and do not put Mangalore to shame by doing all this nonsense. Those hard working and sincere students who seriously want to get additional qualifications will really have a problem because of these dirty students.
