Zulekha wins Best Sustainable Hospital Project Award

Media Release

Sharjah, Jun 4: Zulekha Hospital, Sharjah won the Best Sustainable Hospital Project Award at the Hospital Build and Infrastructure Middle East Exhibition and Congress at Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, Dubai, UAE, held from June 3 to 5.

The awards seek to recognize exceptional healthcare projects developed and funded by organizations in the Middle East.

“We are thrilled to receive this award and accept it as recognition for our continued commitment to sustainable development and innovation, with the help of next generation technology, we have focused on sustainable site development, water conservation, energy efficiency, materials selection, intelligent and green IT and indoor environmental quality. We hope to be the trend setters in sustainable healthcare development,” said Dr Zulekha Daud, MD, Zulekha Hospitals.

The judging panel is made up of internationally recognized and respected judges from a variety of industry sectors and disciplines.

After 21 years of consistent growth across the region, (almost 48 years of Dr Zulekha serving the healthcare needs of the people in UAE) the group decided to expand its first establishment in Sharjah to a 200 bed project with an aim to provide high-quality while keeping sustainability at the core

The challenge here was to first understand the concept of building a super structure that can be accepted as a sustainable model in the overall operational sense and thereafter to implant those principles within the healthcare framework in a manner that may be monitored for future improvements and innovations. The planning, development, assessment and improvisation would help achieve green goals.

“A top down approach to ensure sustainability was maintained at the core of planning, development and implementation of the new hospital building,” said Zanubia Shams, CEO of Zulekha Healthcare Group

Facility and engineering department along with specialist consultants referred internationally approved eco-friendly processes in the planning stage to check feasibility of conservation during implementation. Assessment methods in line with international standards were identified and possible methods adhered, she added. Located in the heart of Sharjah the new facility will be fully functional by September 2013.

Zulekha Healthcare Group is one of the foremost brands providing the highest quality healthcare in the UAE. Zulekha Hospitals were accorded accreditation for their high quality healthcare services from Joint Commission International (JCI), and College of American Pathologists (CAP accreditation for Laboratory standards). The hospital is also the proud recipient of Dubai Quality Award 2011.
