Love women with respect this Valentine’s Day

Feb 14 (DHNS) :
Love women with respect. That sums up the overwhelming message of this Valentine’s Day, on Thursday, poignantly brought to the fore by well-known musician Anoushka Shankar’s painful admission of a sexual abuse that she suffered as a child.

Anoushka’s forthright yet powerful remark was voiced in a video she forwarded to a movement, called “One Billion Rising,” in support of a global campaign to end violence against women.

On Wednesday, the distinct echo of that movement was heard again in India, a nation outraged by a savage gang-rape on a medical student. Demanding dignity and equality, women’s organisations chose to herald in Valentine’s Day packaged to sync with the “One Billion Rising” campaign.

They wanted love, but that feeling has to be with caring and with a deep sense of equality for women. Sharing their experiences of violence, the victims seek to add voice to the campaign, like Anoushka did on Wednesday from her London home.

Noted activist Kamala Bhasin stressed that point as she launched the campaign’s India leg in Delhi. “The campaign is for justice, equality, peace and harmony; we need to work on all aspects of life laws, governance, culture, religion, media and today we commit ourselves to carrying forward this freedom movement,” explained Bhasin.

Peppered with dance, music and street plays on women’s emancipation, the campaign has been propelled by artistes Shabana Azmi and Mallika Sarabhai, Javed Akhtar and Rahul Bose.

Shabana will kick off the campaign in Bhopal. Mallika Sarabhai will launch the drive in Ahmedabad. Disabled women and those working in marginal and exploitative occupations will add depth to the campaign. A public hearing in Bangalore, a prelude to the “One Billion Rising” campaign, had a cross section of women share their experiences of domestic violence on a common platform.

For 31-year-old Anushka, the decision to get into an active campaign mode has a purpose. “As a child I suffered sexual and emotional abuse for several years at the hands of a man my parents trusted implicitly,” she was quoted as saying by the BBC. The daughter of legendary sitar player Ravi Shankar had to do it, “for the child in me who I don't think will recover from what happened.”

It’s a day for parents too

The Karnataka Education Department issued a circular on Wednesday directing the commissioner of Collegiate Education and vice-chancellors of all universities in the State to observe ‘Bhavanamana’ in all colleges on February 14, the Valentine’s Day.

The circular dated February 13, 2013, while referring to a note by the minister for Higher Education, states that students should be made aware of the Upanishadic dictum ‘Mathrudevo bhava, Pithrudevo bhava’ (treat mother and
father as gods).

@Jeevan, You say India got lowest rate of divorce - Do you know how many housewives commited suicide? Even if the marriage works, its due to sacrifice of the wife, She takes all the $#!t! Any kind of husband is great in Indian culture, he can be a abuser or alcoholic. But in WEST abuser husband will go to jail the moment wife complains!

Mr.Bhandarkar I agree your view for some extent but it is not true for all women.I can show you ample examples in Mangalore where married woman having extra marital affairs just to have fun.I had closer interaction with relatives in few cases. The reason they gave is life is to enjoy to maximum because it is one chance.Their husbands are suffering by health problems in addition with divorce applications with false accusitions.Every man is not devil at the same time every woman is not angels.

Message love women with respect is good and its every mans right. But see the woman's dress for campaining this message. I don't say women should fully cover their body, but there shoud be little modesty. If grown up ladies don't show how young generation learns. Then we blame Bajrang Dhal, rapists etc.

@ R . Bhandarkar M . Nothing to do with my story as such. Yup , women r wonderfull , reason of us being here . But thats not over , men r too and they r also equally wonderfull. Now coming to actual point , episode of anoushka unwarranted and i thought she is just taking hostage of delhi incident which is unfortunate in civilised society . And actually calling aunty ( ?! ) , well she is , check her age. No offence please..............// Yes evil resides in each one of us ...male or female. But women have coins in their favour , thanx for patriarchal masculine society which advocates female sympathy , leniancy. No wonder almost all legal provisions are anti male ( no provision for men ) which puts onus on innocents. Crimes by women shooting up and they have unfair advantage of 'fair' convictions. ...... It should be equality in all sense .

Your two 'sides of a coin'comment has put me in a 'spin' and I'm caught in a 'toss of laughter'!!You mean turn a woman and find a man or vice versa do you ? I thought till now that if one had same qualities the idiom or whatever'two sides of the same coin' was used-For instance -Different political parties in India! For being inseperable like man and woman you can use similies like Wicker and the Fire, Flower and the Bee and so on....Got my point?

    Dear Roshan
What have you got against women? I want to listen to your story patiently. Your
comments remind me of Rajesh Khanna in 'Red-Rose' or that of Kamal Hassan in 'SiggapuRojjakal'( I think it was!)Referring to Anoushka as Aunty and all smacks of some-kind of hatred! Why?
Women are beautiful, sensitive, delicate and I can go on and on with the adjectives! What to tell of girls! Maybe it has to do with the 'Stars' in your case!Really Roshan , if at all, it's 'circumstances'that 'corrupt'
women if at all and that too if they yield!Women have stronger resistance, receptivity and bearing power and that's a foregone conclusion! They are the reason for us being here-man-what more do you want?it's just a question of approach-Dear Roshan- Ask anything of a girl or a woman lovingly and more than 95%of the time you will get it! O.K. make it 100%!Haven't tried? Try- Make a start today and see the results....Will meet one day if you wish to talk over your problems...In the meantime do not comment 'naughtily' which makes even some one like me blush green!!

As far as Anoushka aunty comments , if its 'one billion rising ' then for men it is ' one billion raising ' on this day . Propaganda tactics are on surprising to see men still ogle at her despite being middle age. For once have look at first pic , it looks resonable . Turn vegan , lets love animals too. ........ /@ jeevan , mangalore . If couple wants to get physical , nobody can stop them and valentines day is just one of the reason. Yes c0nd0ms sell like hot cakes in this season but don't worry bro there are virgin brides too. Its just a matter of choice , isn't it?. Hate the commercial part of valentines day , its almost like day robbery.

India should oppose majority of rules which made in western world.... However valentines day is good. Holding hands in open is ok.... But more than that in open is not good.... Rape was not big issue in ancient india but now the more western rules spreading the more rape cases rising up.... India has lowest divorce rate. india family country. Who would want to marry in western country? Latest survey shown that australian, british, american womens had relation with over 12 males in her life.... Do you want your wife should be one of them? Uk teens selling their bodies to have education. Do u support that? Valentines day is good but in western world valentines day means usage of c0nd0m.... Valentines day should be about roses.... Nibirian have said that if humans break rule than that human gets punished. Sex before marriage is sin.... Cheating is sin.... Flirting with married human is a sin....
But even china oppose western culture. They even banned many d!rty songs like by ketty perry and lady gaga etc etc. Do not follow western culture or you would end up with many partners who had many 'ex' before.... Save beautiful culture. Support brother sister festival instead of c0nd0m day.... Valentines should be only for couples who will celebrate with rose instead of c0nd0m....

Love women with respect I do and am of the firm believer that where women shed tears happiness disappears. There was a time when I loved girls too passionately, my heart over brimming with love, finding the number of girls overwhelmingly short to receive it!
Long live 'Love' in it's purest form!
