Mangalore : They Wanted to End their Lives, But....

Editorial
Daijiworld Media Network

Mangalore, Apr 30: Time and again, we come across situations and individuals who inspire us to live, to achieve, and strive ahead without fear. There are also times when we insipire the same in others, though we may not even be aware of it.

Here is a story of a couple, who thought they had no reason to live, and had in fact contemplated ending their lives out of the misery of pain. But then something, or someone, made them change their minds, bringing a new ray of hope into their darkened fate.

So who was it that inspired them? None other than You, the esteemed readers of daijiworld.com, who have time and again made a difference in the lives of many. This time, your generosity has reached a new height, a new milestone, for, it is not just one life that you saved, but an an entire family.

Walter D'Souza from Modankap, Bantwal is a mason and is hardly able to make ends meet. His new born son had hernia and his urine bladder was outside the stomach (extropy bladder). Urine was passing through a hole, and later the child was operated.

Wallan's mother is a housewife, and for the past one year, the couple has left no stone unturned to get their child treated, spending all their meagre savings on him. Wallan is one year old now.

At one point of time, the frustration of not being able to give their child its precious life began eating into them, and they almost lost all hopes. They could not bear to live without Wallan, and neither could they see him in pain. But then, they needed a whopping Rs 6.5 lac for his treatment, which was way beyond their means. Still they tried their best, but in vain.

"Honestly, we thought we would end our lives. We did not want to be a burden on anyone, and also could not bear to see the pain of our little darling..." said Walter D'Souza with eyes brimming with tears when he visited daijiworld office last week to submit the bank statement to us.

"Someone suggested that I should visit daijiworld as they might help, as that person had heard of many people who had benefited through the website," he said.

When we scrutinized his appeal, we found it be genuine and recommended by many.

A simple appeal on daijiworld column has now enabled people to contribute nearly Rs one million (Rs 10 lac) towards the cause!  And that too within a gap of just 20 days !

"I have always heard of good people, but now I know how those good people can become God for you..." he said, referring to every donor as God, "For me, they are truly God, who came in the form of good Samaritans and helped me out my difficulty. The doctor has assured me that Wallan will be normal after his surgery. Soon he will be operated...."

"I want to thank each person individually, how can I do it? I do not have anyone's address, people only remitted money but never provided their contact details," Walter humbly says, "Sir, my son's surgery will cost around 6.5 lac, can I donate the rest to other people? There may be many kids with problems like Wallan, and their parents must be facing a similar situation like us...." When these words came from this gentleman, we knew we had helped the right cause.

As usual, being a responsible media, we want to say thank you to all those who contributed, prayed, supported and gave a new lease of life to little Wallan in every possible way.

As long as we have readers like you, who can stop us from extending a helping hand?

May God bless us all.

Daijiworld is a unique website with dedicated commitment to the needy in the society irrespective of caste, creed, language and gender of coastal Karnataka. It is the voice of the voiceless. It brings hope and new life for those who have lost even a ray of hope in their lives. DW is the light, salt and yeast of our society. May Daijiworld's tribe increase.

May the Risen Lord bless all of you. It will never be forgotten by the Merciful Lord! I appreciate the sincerity of Walter to re-channelize the extra amount, but I suggest that he keep some amount as surety for the future of the child as well as his poor family, if all the donors agree, although the Lord has told us not to worry about tomorrow! It's only a suggestion, I too strongly believe in the Providence of God!

Great to have intimation on your site so that genuine people are helped by great benefactors. If these people go the the so called medical funds of the church, they get max Rs 10,000 after many attempts and pleading. What can the poor people do with Rs 10,000 for medication. It is as good as nothing.
Great Walter you are God sent to help the poor and needy. Keep up your good work. God will bless you hundred fold and let your site give more sight to the poor and needy.

I have one suggestion. Daijiworld should open a dedicated bank account through which monies for the noble causes like the above can be collected and channeled. This will ensure two things
    1. Daiji will ensure only needy people get the money and this channel is not misused.
    2. Effective use of funds among the needy - the payments from Daiji can be made directly to the Hospital or to the end use.

"Sir, my son's surgery will cost around 6.5 lac, can I donate the rest to other people? There may be many kids with problems like Wallan, and their parents must be facing a similar situation like us...."

The above sentence made me cry.
