Lucknow, Sep 30: For a moment Baby Sankhwar had no idea about the proceedings. She was called upon the stage and the whole audience clapped to honour her efforts for changing the lives of many of her friends. The girl received the award for Star Child Changemaker from Child Fund India during a function at Lucknow on Friday.

The organization Child Fund India with its headquarter office at Bangalore had a moment to rejoice for completing 60 years of serving in the country. The occasion did not go waste as its national director Dola Mohapatra shared several informative findings which may be instrumental in shaping the policies of Uttar Pradesh.

The highlight was a survey by the organization that showed the true picture of U P. As many as 37 districts of the state figure in the last 150 districts of the country on a parameter of eight indices. The survey took into account health issues, poverty, education, social status, poverty and others during its research spread across 598 districts of the country. "UP has a dismal record with a majority of its districts being backward in every account. These findings are depressing but also propel us to strive for bridging the gaps," said Mohapatra.

The organization with a budget of US $ 11.3 million has taken up the cudgels to reach out to maximum population of the country including UP. The major thrust will be on providing infrastructure in health services as generators for power back up in remote health areas, microscope for pathological examination, sourcing equipment for better medical services and training of basic health workers.

Another task where the organization can make a difference is the family tracking system. As per Mohapatra, the organization has already reached out to nearly 16000 pregnant women who are properly registered. A tracking of them for providing pre and post natal care will be enforced. “It is our effort that no pregnant women dies due to lack of medical care in our work area,” he added.

Dozens of other children who had also arrived on the occasion shared their experiences. Some of them so touching where they made their life from a bonded labour in bangle industry in Ferozabad district to a self reliant acting as an example for others. “We need to take care of our children as they are our assets and future of the country,” said Mohapatra. The organization aims to take up child friendly programmes in various regions of the state including the poverty stricken Bundelkhand region. A five year (2012-17) plan by the organization is on the anvil to address the core issues of the failing state.

On the occasion president and CEO Child Fund International, Anne Lynam Goddard was also present who felt deeply touched by an exhibition showcasing the journey of the organization and in a way helping the society.
