New Delhi, Mar 25: The Indian National Congress on Wednesday received eviction notices for its long-time national headquarters at 24 Akbar Road and the Indian Youth Congress office at 5 Raisina Road, with March 28 set as the deadline to vacate the premises.

While the party has already shifted its main operations to its new headquarters, Indira Bhavan near ITO, it had continued to retain the Akbar Road address due to its historical and political significance.

Reacting to the development, Congress MP and senior lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi termed the move “illegal and politically motivated” and said the party would pursue all available legal remedies.

Party leaders emphasised that the Akbar Road property holds symbolic importance in the organisation’s legacy, adding that the Congress has been paying market rent for the bungalow.

Sources indicated that the party is assessing legal options, though there are concerns that the government’s stance appears more assertive this time compared to previous instances.

Congress functionaries also revealed that attempts were made after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections to have the Akbar Road property allotted to a senior party MP, but the move did not materialise. Meanwhile, the Raisina Road bungalow had been officially allotted in the name of the party for use by its youth wing.

Further developments are awaited as the party prepares to respond legally to the notices.
